Play by play importance?

As I read more threads it is becoming evident that I and others might be in a minority as far as using play by play. But just how much of a minority, if indeed we are? There are varying degrees of how pbp can be used. Some play out all of their games while others of us sim to a certain inning and play out the rest of the game, while still others may use it in some other ways. So I would like to know, is play by play issues that important to the majority of OOTP owners, or could it be that a great majority only sim?

I haven't played a game with OOTP since OOTP2. I'm a simmer. This feature could be removed and it wouldn't bother me at all.

I do understand that there are folks who enjoy this part of the game and I see its importance, though.

I have been playing out more games than usual, especially now with 6. At times I would phase out on reading the PbP because it got repetitive or I was getting impatient. However if more work were put in this area, I would get more enjoyment out of it in return.

Looking early on that pbp issues which would include interface and actual pbp script is relatively important to this community.

Doesn't feel like baseball unless I am actually playing the games. Simming is just numbers on a screen to me. I could get that from Baseball-reference.com .

Pbp is VERY important to me. I know many eventually want to see more variety and the occasional odd play (e.g., dropped pop-up's), but I've really appreciated some of the new stuff included in pbp in version 6 (e.g., "Wow, I'd like to see the instant replay of that!")

IMHO OOTP's play-by-play lags far behind the rest of the game. If I were prioritizing necessary improvements PbP would be #1 on my list.

Good to see PBP is as important to most as it is to me. Verifies for me that pbp issues can be pushed a little more.

I think PbP is important to the game experience. However, I might suggest the reason it has been slightly overlooked is that I don't think it is a marketable feature to be the main focus of a new OOTP version. Had the number one improvement for OOTP6 been 'enhanced PbP', I doubt the sales would have skyrocketed. Therefore, I do understand its seeming neglect (and more importantly for me, the neglect of the 'news' section) by Markus.

I might add, off-topic as it is, that this might account for the new look of OOTP6. Can you imagine the amount of moaning from purchasers about how it was more a patch than a new version, if it looked the same and was toned up, rather than had some new 'revolutionary' features?

Well, that was an odd digression. Yay for better PbP and news!

League doesn't feel as real to me if I don't play out all the games.

I play out all my games and would like to see improvements made to the pbp, but it's not that important to me. I'd rather see more and better news stories and other things to make it more of a virtual universe.

This is at the top of my priority list for the game:

Improved play-by-play... complete with all of the normal everyday plays included in the game with an occasional odd play...too many basic plays are currently missing...more variety in play-by-play text.

Also include stealing with 2 strikes...stealing home...and other strategies now missing from the game.

And give us the one pitch mode...make it optional for those who want to play out every pitch.

These have been repeatedly asked for since at least OOTP3.

Henry responded to an earlier thread about this same subject and stated Marcus has to make a decision in each new version as far as what features have priority...and one day play-by-play will be top priority.

I was always under the impression that simmers were in the great majority in OOTPB until I saw this recent poll:

http://www.ootpdevelopments.com/boar...ts&pollid=1428

It seems simmers have about 53%...playout players about 47%.

I was greatly surprised and it made me hopeful one day PBP will become more important and become a reality.

I think the results are kind of what I expected. PBP is important to most, but there is still a large number of people who don't consider it important.

I play out all of my games and this is the one area I'd really like to see improved on for OOTP7. OOTP is by far the best baseball sim going and IMHO pbp is the only area lacking to make it a truly complete game. With that said however I completely agree with Eugene Church that it should be in addition to the one pitch mode not in place of it.

The closer you get to minute detail, the more important a richly descriptive pbp becomes, since 3d graphics or video-quality visuals are not here yet for this franchise. When the pitch-by-pitch option arrives ( and Lordy, do I hope it remains optional! ), then a vastly improved pbp will be mandated. This is, after all, a text-based construct and the realism of the described moment will be carried by the evocative quality of that text.

How sweet it would be if one of the options was the ability to choose from the broadcast styles of the great radio broadcasters to describe the action. Imagine choosing a Vin Scully "audio skin" or Lon Simmons, or Red Barber--or, for comic relief, Ron Fairly.

On the other hand, I think the accurate reproduction of both stats and action--coupled with a cleaner interface--clearly take precedence in my value system.

I usually play out a number of games, however I do find it gets boring after a while.

After that point, I go to Simming and play the GM role. I have yet to grow tired of that.

When playing, any time my manager gets thrown out of the game, I'll sim the rest. What's the point, after all of clicking one play at a time if you have no input ?
