MLB Extra Innings

Is it worth it? I live in Portalnd Or and am a huge Cards fan. Will I actually get to see some of their games? I've heard horor stories of people ordering it and never seeing their team. Any one that has it, can you give me a quick review?

Thanks,

John

Who announces? Is it always the home team or some MLB national team? I get WGN and can't stand listening to Steve Stone.

you get access to any game that is broadcast on a fox sports net, with whoever's announcers are doing the game, i.e. you get the red sox announcers if the game is on the Northeastern Sports net, etc. I love it.

How much does it cost per month, and is it satellite only, or cable as well?

Most cable companies offer it with digital cable. It's usually around $149 for the entire season. I'd love to get it myself, but I'm still now sure if switching to digital cable is worth it or not. Unfortunately, Satellite is not an option for me.

Don't subscribe to Extra Innings if you're a home town fan and think you'll get access to more games for the team in your home market. All home market games are blacked out - regardless of whether the home team or away team is broadcasting it.

If you live out of a team's market, you will get all of their games that MLB Extra Innings carries. (A Reds fan living in Oregon, for example can see probably 100 Reds games)

The bulk of Extra Innings broadcasts are picked up from Fox Sports Net but other carriers are picked up, as well. Both NESN (Red Sox) and YES (Yankees) were carried last season. You can usually get 5 or more games per evening although some will be doubled on WGN, TBS, or ESPN.

That said, I like it because I can get exposure to most of the other teams in MLB. If I know Clemons is going to pitch for the Astros that night, more than likely I can find the game on Extra Innings. Also, I like the variety of start times. Most nights there are two or three west coast games if you are up late.

It's cool, too, because you can get a taste of all the different broadcast crews and styles. A personal favorite are the Dodger games that Vin Skully does solo. I also liked Jerry Remy on the Red Sox games. The worst broadcasts had to be the Brewers games. Don Sutton's son and Bill Schroeder were painful. I would rather get Bob Uecker's lagged audio feed off the internet than listen to those two. Also any game that Josh Lewin does with his mushy S's is "unwashable".

Mlb.tv is a godsend for those outside the US, as we get all the nationally broadcast games as well (i.e. we are not subject to the blackouts).

That's how I'll be watching Opening Day with my late breakfast tomorrow!

Same here. I don't have cable or satellite so MLB.TV is great. They ditched RealPlayer too so I can uninstall that virus of a media player off of my system as an added bonus.

I get use out of it because my Fox sports affiliate is rather wacky, it will talk about all the teams in both Florida and Georgia, show adds stating that both states' games will be airing at 7PM but then will just show their regular program (Best damn show is never pre-empted on my channel). So I haven't came across any game that's been blacked out yet, since my Fox Sports never airs any games. Also keep in mind that if a game isn't on Fox Sports, et al then its not going to be on extra innings, so if you want to watch many Expo games then your SOL since very few of their games are on television.

Since you are a Cardinals fan then you will probably be able to see most of their games, I believe their Fox Sports affiliate carries most of their games and you won't be subject to a blackout, but as an example of what some people may experience the Seattle Mariners games' may be frequently blacked-out. Also at certain times there are never games on, ie Weds night because of ESPN and whenever Fox starts Saturday baseball no games will be on extra innings.

And I had no idea who the Brewers' regional broadcasters were but would have to agree that they are some of the worse I have heard. Perhaps its been because the Brewers have been so terrible for so long so they never really have anything good to say about the Brewers but they spend more time talking about what is going on outside the game then what's happening during the game.

Their TV crew is Daron Sutton (who is just terrible) and former catcher Bill Schroeder (who was okay before Sutton came aboard and is now just as bad). Their radio crew on the other hand is amazingly good, mainly due to Bob Uecker They are definitely one of the teams where it is nice to mute the TV and turn on the radio while you watch. However, I can't watch any Brewer games this year since they are exclusively on cable and MLB.TV blacks me out for their home games. Oh well, I'll have to stick with the Braves

Teflon - MLB.TV does indeed archive all the games. You used to have to pay extra for it but now it's included in the cost which is a good thing.

Yes. A MLB tripleheader on Extra Innings with OOTP6 simming on the computer. Won't be a bad way to spend a few evenings.

I may get Extra Innings myself this year, especially if they offer a $99 special like they do for other packages. The only catch was that you have to sign up before opening day. But, since I am a huge Braves fan, I can just watch most of their games on TBS.
