Bud may be doing something right for a change

Selig is considering invoking the "best interests" clause of baseball to toughen steroid testing. First positive test would most likely mean a two week suspension.

This would be a very good thing if Bud does this, IMO. The "invasion of privacy" argument by the union seems pretty weak to me. Other thoughts?

This is of course good for publicity, but he's already got the wrong first step by publicly "considering" it. What if he didn't do it in the end? Should have kept the plan secret before announcing it.

I suspect he's going to do it regardless but is trying to pressure the union to accept it so it doesn't seem so forced upon them.

If Bud actually grows the nads to do this, Fehr will slap an injunction on it and this will wind up in court for at least another year.

It is bullcrap, and just the kind of thing I'd expect from Selig.

Especially since MLB isn't a government entity, and nobody is forced to participate in it.

I don't really think steroids and steroid-like substances need to be banned or controlled, but if that's what MLB wants to do, well, it's certainly their league. More power to 'em. Assuming, of course, they didn't bargain away to the union the right to do something like this.

It sounds like Selig did give away those rights. Maybe nothing will be done after all.

But one official, speaking on condition of anonymity, told the paper that Selig could not change a policy that was agreed to in the collective bargaining agreement of 2002.

I read that many players want to do it to, but the Union isn't letting them. It may have been satire, but they said that some players are looking to revolt if they don't get it done.

"Many" probably still means minority in this case.

You know what, though? If these players really wanted to be tested, they could get tested on their own, and secretly submit the results to whoever they think cares about it (their team? the commissioner's office?) . As long as they don't make a big deal about it and go public with it, I can't see where they'd have a problem.

Perhaps we should realize that the testing plan in 2004 would already be different from 2003. MLB will have mandatory testing for steroids for at least the next two seasons, since 5-7% of players tested positive for steroids during 2003's random testing.

Penalties:

First offense: Treatment only.
Second offense: 15-day suspension without pay and/or a fine of up to $10,000
Third offense: 25-day suspension without pay and/or a fine of up to $25,000
Fourth offense: 50-day suspension without pay and/or a fine of up to $50,000
Fifth offense: One-year suspension without pay and/or a fine of up to $1 million.

You do realize that they can just call a union meeting and vote for it if they really want to.

Talks are cheap, and "welcome the idea" hardly means anything.

You do realize Steroids do not stay in the urine for very long?

All this hubub is for nothing...steroids are akin to cocaine in the system...

Mary Jane on the other hand stays in the urine up to 90 days...so basically all those pre employment or random drug test has the highest probability of detecting the less harmful drug, while one of the most harmful crack cocaine stays in for 48 hours...Steroids just 14 days for oral usage. Injected up to 3 months...but from what I understand THG is taken orally and it .might be flushed out quicker than anabolic steroids

So until they want to take a blood test...and perform DNA testing, (most substances detectable up to 5 years or more) it STILL is a big joke

Oh and I hope no player eats Poppy Seed products, THAT has been proven to have a "false positive" on drug tests up to 3 days
