Potential new online league...
Considering starting a new OOTP5 league and just gauging interest.
Some of the league features/rules: The league will be a career league using real players and begin play in 1979 using the Ankit database and original rosters, no draft. Will play a 154 game schedule. No DH will be used in both leagues. Expansion most likely won’t happen, but may be left up to the owners. Financials will be on, but will be adjusted to be historically accurate. This means all players will have their contracts modified prior to beginning play to reflect either their real life contract (as found on either retrosheet.org or the baseball reference website), or a contract appropriate to the 1979 season. All contract lengths will be set to 5 years and are non-guaranteed. Contracts in future years will be determined by the owners, but will adhere to a strict salary range. For instance, no contracts over $2 million until 1985. Other aspects of the financials (tv contracts, merchandising, attendance revenue, etc…) will be adjusted appropriately as well. Roster limit of 36 players (this may be lowered or raised, or just scrapped altogether). No trading allowed. The league will use a “true free agency” system. Basically, there will be 3 periods during the season (mid-May, beginning of July, and end of August) where any team can negotiate with any player not on their roster. During this time, no games will be played. My current thought is to have a 4 day break (7 days in July to allow for an All-Star game) during these periods. Teams will submit their offers (again, adhering to the predetermined salary range. Most likely up to $1 million for the 1979 season) to the commissioner. All contract lengths would be 5 years. After each day of offers, the commish will post a list of players and the highest offer received (or the player’s preferred offer… factors such as loyalty/leadership ratings and potential playing time will influence the player’s decision). Teams can not negotiate with their own players, even if the player has received an offer from another team (but players may choose to remain on their current team, even if they receive a higher offer). Also, a team may only sign up to 3 players during any in-season free agency period. If a team signs a player from another team during one of these periods, the signing team must compensate the team losing the player. Currently, the compensation will be ½ of the player’s current yearly contract (min. $100,000, up to $500,000). An alternate compensation method may include future draft choices as well. Teams may release players only during the free agency periods. Teams may negotiate with any player in the free agent pool (not signed to a team) at anytime during the season. League totals will be adjusted to reflect the 1979 season and will remain as such for the duration of the league. ERA settings will be modified to increase starting pitchers endurance and reduce the number of saves (ideally, 30-35 will lead league). Each team will play in Old League Park the first year. Stadium capacity will be reduced to reflect real life attendance figures. Owner’s may “build” their own ballparks after the first year. The method for doing so has not yet been determined. Changing a player’s position will be done by the commissioner only. If you’d like to change or add a position for a player… e-mail the commissioner requesting the change. All natural changes (OF to 1B, SS to 2B or 3B, C to 1B or OF, etc…) will be made. Range and fielding pct will be randomly assigned (generally a decrease of 1 letter grade and the league average fielding pct – 10). Other changes (OF to 2B or SS or 3B, C to 2B or 3B, 1B to 2B or SS, etc…) will have a random chance of succeeding (no more than 50%). All changes will be made immediately after receiving the request and be posted on the league website. Any change made by playing a player out of position within OOTP will reversed. I will only commish the league. I will not control any team, but may need to “help” any computer AI teams during the free agency periods to maintain competitiveness. Sims would be conducted 3 days a week, alternating between 7 and 8 days. We’d probably take a full week to conduct each in-season free agent period. I would hope the off-season would take no more than 3 weeks to complete. If you would be interested in actively participating in this league, please post here, PM, or e-mail me. If I get enough interest (at least 16-20 people), I will go ahead and begin preparing the league. I would like to begin the league by February 20th. Any and all comments/suggestions are welcome. Thanks.
