League Emulating MLB Roster Management

I'm a OOTP player with some experience in online leagues, but none as a commisioner yet. What I'd like to do is start a league that tried to imitate the major leagues in terms of roster management as much as possible, including set 40-man rosters, a waiver wire, a rule 5 draft, and minor league free agency. I want this to resemble MLB in talent evaluation too, by placing a premium on using stats: it would be a talent-only ratings league. I think draft pick compensation would be a good idea for the league too…it could be done using star ratings.

Would anyone be interested in something like this?

I would DEFINITELY be interested - that's try I how to play the game anyways (talent only). Would you be planning on using real rosters? I think if you used like the Total Minors 2003 rosters with talent only, and all those rules (waivers, 40-man rosters, rule-5 draft) I would be down in a second. By the way, if this gets off the ground, I call the Pirates. - Matt

I'm in

I'd love ot be in a sim like this and I'm sure their are many others out there that have been dying for a league like this. If you decide to do this I'd like to take the Phillies.

Check out FBBL. We use fairly accurate MLB rules and are talent only.

It's a nice idea but the problem is talent variations between OOTP and MLB. For example, two guys of equal talent might be traded for each over in MLB but in OOTP one is four stars while the other is one star.

I'm glad there is such interest in this league. I am going to try and start a league called the "Pennant Run Baseball League"(for lack of a better name) that follows the rules I proposed. I have set up a website at www.freewebs.com/prbl that isn't complete but has the rules and info about joining. The site will be complete before the league is filled. It will use Total Minors 2003 with talent only(just like mberner suggested).

I'm interested as to how you'll handle the minor league free agency.

Kidd and ud411, if you want to join, just click the link above in the thread..

As for minor league free agency, I intend to just release the players at the end of the season who aren't on 40-man rosters and are eligible. It might not make much of a difference in the league, but I know that before in leagues I have been able to keep valuable but blocked players in the minor leagues without risk of losing them, and this prevents it from happening.

Wouldn't you have to manually keep track of who is eligible?

Yes he would have to manually keep track of eligible players as there are no utilities or features within the game for this.

Well, he could have a separate minor league file with separate free agency, but that would present other issues.

Allow me to inform you of the potential problems you'll have as we've done this in the FBBL as greg mentioned.

a) 40-man roster management. The amount of work required to keep owners honest and keep an updated 40-man roster is ridiculous.

b) waivers. Remember, there's numerous different types, which relate to the 40-man to confuse things further

c) rule V - eligibility. You'll have to create your own eligibility as OOTP doesn't track service time.

Really, it's a good idea that's hard to implement. That's why I've been always hoping OOTP6 has a 40-man roster cause I can't imagine it being that difficult to code (potentially the AI would be though), and it's a huge pain in the ass to try to deal with it outside the game.

I've been thinking the same thing. I would love to implement these ideas but the work outweighs the benefit. One thing you could do, though, is collaborate with a couple commissioners on one big league so you can share the work. But of course, there's the trust issue with that.
