In my league, I have an owner that I cant get this straightened out with. He sends me his .EXP file, I Import to FTP, I do this with all teams and it works, when I do with him it doesnt. We went over the Manual several times to fix the problem, still didnt work. We've done countless trial and error. FTP is set up correctly. What do we do? Thanks.

I really have no idea why it isn't working, need more details. He can always attach it to an email.

I am the owner listed above. We also tried doing the email attachment and the commish said that didn't work either.
I see nothing wrong from my end. I download the updated league file. Copy it to my league directory, load the league and everything looks good. This is really annoying. I'm on the verge of quitting the league b/c he nevers gets any of my changes! Please help...

Are both computers running the same version of the game? (Shouldn't be an issue, but who knows)
The only reason I could think of why your import wouldn't work like that is if you had a different date on the league file than what was on the commissioner's PC.. When you tried it via email attachment I would assume the commissioner placed the file in the ExpImp directory and pressed the import lineup button from your Team Setup Screen. What ISP are you using to try and FTP the lineups to the commissioner? I had problems with the FTP function while I was using AOL in a few leagues... Don't know if any of these mismashed thoughts will help you, just trying to think of things that might impact the process. |

I stated to the commish that I was using OOTP4 ver C and that didn't raise any flags w/ him.
To get the updated file, I just initiate the download from his website. I use standard Windows Save File as. I have a cable modem - Roadrunner. But since emailing fails as well as FTPing I doubt it's a transmission problem. What is the proper procedure to add the updated league file to your existing .lg league file? I can't imagine I'm doing this wrong b/c I see all the updated transactions, standings, etc. Thanks for the ideas and keep the coming! Hopefully the commish will check this b/c as I've told him, I see no problems on my end at all.

You should just unzip the file, being careful to pay close attention to the "exact path" used when he zipped it up so that it is placed in the correct directory and make sure to "overwrite" any older files.
When you unzip the league file are the standings, etc updated? If so, then it is working correctly. If not then you need to check the above steps and follow them closely. Commish, are you getting any error message concerning his team files? Do you have a separate FTP program? If so, you can check to see if his files are actually being uploaded. Just use the same settings that you use for the in-game program and that will allow you to view all of the files that have been uploaded, check for the correct "number" team. [ 05-16-2002, 02:11 PM: Message edited by: Steve Kuffrey ]

That is what I do. Unzip the file using WinZip to my existing .lg folder overwriting all files. Yes, I see the updated standings, etc.
I'll email the commish to let him know there is some feedback. Thanks guys.

I tried to download your league file but the link didn't seem to work for me... I was hoping to check how things are setup in the league file to make sure everything would work for me (excepting of course the FTPing of the lineup).
From the commissioner's own site though it says you can send a written list of changes to his email address for your lineups.. you may want to do this as a backup, while you guys try to sort this out. |

Scott, the download for last sim wont work now because I took it down and is offline. I am currently using AOL. I read above in the thread that that could be causing the problem. The message that it says is Import Failed: Old or Invalid Archive.

The old archive would indicate that he wasn't using the latest league file, or that you had updated the league file prior to importing his file (which doesn't seem likely because other files would have failed then as well).
When you zip the league file how do you do it... is there a folder inside the zip called VirtualMLB.lg? He says he was unzipping it to the league folder... which is not the standard way to unzip the files, normally I unzip my files to the OOTP4 folder, because the zipped up league file has a subfolder with my leagues name in it (example OOL_PS1.zip has subfolder OOL.lg). So if he's unzipping to his league folder and your file has such a subfolder than he would be using the wrong folder to get the files from. (However if his standings are updating correctly than this would indicate that he was doing it right) My problems with AOL were exporting from AOL to the OOTP-Leagues (or other servers) don't know of any issues going towards AOL. So I guess the next question is how is your league zip file setup? Then we can try and go from there... |

Alright, this is what I do. Generate league report, upload it, get that up. Once the sites updated, I then put the zip up. I go to C:ProgramFiles\OOTP4\vMLB.lg I then select all the files, right click, add to zip, then delete which ones i see fit. I then upload the league file to the server.

Ok, I had the commish email the updated league file directly to at least eliminate the downloading aspect. I have the league file. It does not have subfolders in the zip archive. Just all the files. So, I have unzipped to my existing vMLB.lg directory and agreed to overwrite all files. Now I load the league and take a look. Everything looks updated. It has the latest standings, transactions, etc. So I feel pretty dang confident that I have the most up-to-date league file.
I will now make my updates and Export to FTP. I will also just Export it and email it to the commish. I'll have him post how things look from his side.

Our problems with the commish getting a good league file update from me have continued. Howevever, I think I may have finally figured out what is causing it. I think that every time I cut a couple minor-leaguers from my team it causes the import to fail on his end. Could this be the problem? Since I don't always cut someone, some times my updates goes through successfully. Comments?

Most leagues from the era of OOTP2-3 have rules against that anyway, partially because that prevents your roster export to work with the commish's master file. Let your commish know that he has to do all transactions (trades or releases) - GM's have to let him know if they want to pull off a trade or release someone. Usually these transactions by online leagues are done in a league forum or by email. Maybe the commish did know this but just didn't realize you were releasing players . It would be handy if a future build of OOTP would have error checking for this so it lets you know what the problem is. |

Thanks for the reply. This is my first time in an online league, but once I put together the correlation between me cutting players and the update failing, it made sense. I believe this is our commish's first online league as well so we are all learning the ropes! It would be nice if the game allowed the commish to disable the ability to cut players.
Despite my inability to successfully update my roster, I am still leading the AL West. Maybe my team likes the hands-off approach - haha.

Any type of editing/transactions, must be done by the commissioner or the roster import/export will not work. All that you should do is promote/demote, and juggle lineups/pitching staffs. Player signings/trades/releases must be processed by the commish as they change the league file enough to validate the import. (Otherwise what would stop you from making a trade with some other team, without that teams owner knowing it?)

Yep. I knew about trades and player adds, but cutting someone seemed fairly benign. I was thinking they would just show up as a Free Agent next update and it didn't really give anyone an unfair advantage. I gave the commish the info from this post and he mentioned that there were others in our league w/ failed imports for probably the same reason. Thanks again.
