Decent characters w/ no power?
Anyone had a character who couldn't hit for power that had a decent career? My first attempt (on "normal") has stunk:
Contact 70 Eye 40 Power 10 Gap 80 Speed 100 Defense 100 I figured this character would be able to hit over .300, draw a good amount of walks, steal a ton of bases, and hit a lot of doubles with that gap power, while winning fielding awards. However, my highest OBP in the majors was something like .330, and my highest BA was .297 (same year). I've won two fielding awards, but at the age of 33 I'm out of the league, and the offers aren't rolling in. In short, he's been a crap player, when it seems like he should have been a good one. Anyone had any success with similar players? |

well.. u have to have enough power to be able to get it out of the infield on a fairly good amount of occasions, or whats the point of the GAP rating.. if u dont have the power to reach the gap..
make contact and try to outrun the ball or hope the second baseman bobbles it seems to have been what your players career was all about. Nice utility player. |

I thought the "power" rating was about hitting homers and the "gap" rating was about hitting doubles. Was I wrong?

i think "gap" means more about hardliners than it means about loopers over the second baseman.
and if u have power meaning u will lift the ball more often into the outfield, and deep outfield.. the combo of the two will create more doubles, and at your speed triples. contact just means making contact.. i'd imagine it goes something like this.. the computer first looks at the CONTACT rating.. tells it whether u hit or miss... Than the Power rating, and looks at the range of the rating.. and compares it to where the ball should drop, like a lottery percentage wise... it will more often be a ball into the outfield and deeper into the outfield than someone will less power rating.. than it compares it to the dimensions of the stadium.. takes the random number and checks whether in that particular stadium its a HOME RUN.. if its not.. than it uses the GAP skill level.. the higher the gap level is, the better the chance that the ball drops into a hard to reach spot at whatever the random number length the ball was hit at... than it looks at the defender covering and his range, and whether he can field it or not.. other aspects ofcourse, like being hot or cold or whatever blah blah blah |

My catcher has 80 contact (87 modified), with 60 eye.
Only 10 for power, and 20 for gap. I just won my first batting title, hitting .348, with a .424 OBP. I am now 24, with 3 partial and one full season. Lifetime average .310, and climbing fast. I have 100 speed, 100 defense, and only 53 steal. Now that I am making a good salary, I will save up and but a decent bat...the one I want is 6 million or so. Using a Diablo II term, my "build" was designed to hit first or second in the order, steal bases, and be a defensive stud. This is working great so far....only concern is that I played 140 games last year, with 85 runs scored and 162 hits. Ain't going to make the HOF like that....but as a catcher, I get the day off once a week. The next build of this type will be an outfielder! |

I've been basically making a rule that each character has 3 of the 6 RPG attributes depending on the position, and then making stereotypical players based on that.
For catching, as an example, I would say the stereotype is high dexterity, high intelligence, and high charisma (catchers are generally the most charismatic guys if you look through baseball history). So 4 points to each of those, then ratings that more or less match the RPG attributes (didn't give my catcher a high stealing ability, which I probably should have - low speed/high ability would be close to a guy like Darren Daulton who stole like 50 out of 60 bases in his career). Personality - team-captain (a catcher is a leader, right?). Guy I'm currently playing is Jason Moyer, Jr. First baseman. Obsessive-driven. No intelligence, dexterity, or charisma, but otherwise built like a mule. Strong, healthy, and relying a lot on luck to make up for his lack of tools. After this I'll probably make a stereotypical second baseman, then third baseman, etc etc. When I feel up to it I guess I should get a thread going in the dynasty forum to track the Jason Moyer family.

I guess I didn't give my guy enough luck. Always injured, and right after he seemed to be putting it all together, the Cubs had gotten a superstar 2B, AND had a top 2B prospect in AAA, meaning my guy spent the AAA season as a back-up, and I think was 5-for-9 on the season, then released, and retired.

The lack of Eye probably hurt you too. The AI in ITP/OOTP seems to generally value players based on Contact/Power/Eye more than anything else, and it's good to have at least 2 of those in the 7-8 range or higher.

Quick update on my first baseman:
Haven't posted anything besides his makeup, but here are his stats from the past week (he's 28 now): 6 games, .423 avg, 4 doubles and 5 homeruns. Now that's a good week of baseball. Edit: Back to back player of the week!! Next week I ended up hitting .462 with 7 doubles and 4 homeruns. Now if I could just draw some damn walks (30 eye). A few years ago I struck out 205 times ffs, and last year I won the MVP while K'ing 183 times. Jason

Without posting everything, I had a player with a 100 rating on contact, a 10 rating in power and a 40 in gap (thinking Pete Rose, Mr. Singles himself). Decent speed, solid defense.
Ended up a career .305 hitter, about 35 career HRs and just under 1000 rbi. Made the majors at age 21 and retired when I could not get a new contract at age 38. Ended with 2900+ career hits and made the HoF.

Right now I'm playing a guy who started with 5 contact, 1 power, 10 eye, and 1 gap power. His current ratings (age 30) are 90 contact, 80 power, 100 eye, and 70 gap.
No MVP awards yet and only 2 all star games, but he did have a season where he hit .335 with 106 walks, 31 homeruns, and 57 steals. Jason

Nope, normal. He started with 5 contact, 1 power, 10 eye, and 1 gap. He's now up to 100 contact, 90 power, 100 eye, and 70 gap.

When I read books when maxed, it says something like "You finished the book but your talent is already maxed out"
