I started my league in 1977 and now I am up to 1981 and whe I get to the sept 1st call up date no team fills their roster to 40 players.....I get some teams with 34 players and some teams with less than that

Keep in mind some players are learning new positions and may not be finished learning and that by promoting a player to the major league roster you start his automatic contract clock ticking bring his free agency closer to occurring which isn't always advantageous.

I don't believe the 40 man roster is mandatory. Maybe the clubs don't want to pay the salary?

While I noted a similar experience in the other thread concerning this, I will also chime in to point out that most MLB teams don't actually carry, or at least dress, the full 40, for various reasons (some of which are, and some of which aren't, in OOTP at this point).

Its not mandatory in fact very few MLB teams fill up to the 40 man limit in real life... normally for the not starting the clock reasons (unless the player is really close to the big leagues (like will be there next year, why start the clock if you don't have too), although they'll sometimes reward a non-prospect for a decent season (often before the player is released to the wolves of minor league free agency).

So, any non-prospect in that situation will have their contract bought by the parent club and placed on the major league roster -- so they won't be minor league free agents, technically (since minor league free agency is a different animal). Baseball's transaction rules are really fascinating, but a lot of them are "sekrit". I've only gotten a peek once at the actual manual book; it was kind of cool. |

I know this... I avoided the contract purchased lingo to avoid confusing people... (obviously this didn't work)
A good transaction primer for the lay person is here: http://espn.go.com/mlb/s/1999/0908/46397.html |

I think this is a bug, although I'm not sure if it is league specific or in OOTP4 in general. Every AI team in my league took its roster to only 32-34 players--which is not the problem IMHO. What is the problem, and maybe targy can confirm this, is that the AI only brought up pitchers, and in some cases sent down a position player or two.
I tried running in different Eras and doing the Automanage, but the rosters remained the same. Effectively, because the AI doesn't generally use call ups at most positions, this isn't a huge problem, but with a second experience of this there seems to be a hiccup somewhere. My league was imported from OOTP3, so maybe that is one possibility. Otherwise, I'm not sure where to look.

I haven't noticed it in fictional leagues, but admittedly I haven't looked too hard for it...
Has anyone seen this in a non-historical league? |
