Okay, I remember reading here in the forums that one possible way to get a one league association to have playoffs is to set up a 2 league association, but have the second league empty.
I wanted to try this out, so I fired up OOTP3 (don't have 4 yet). And it does work - sort of. There was no problem in creating this scenario; I was able to draft players and create a schedule just fine, even though the second league contained no teams. The games would sim fine, except for one thing. When it reached the end of the first month, the game would crash. Restarting the game, I checked the last day of the month and it did have results, boxscores, and stats for all that day's games. However, while the News ticker at the bottom of the screen lists it as May 1st, on the schedule screen the games for May 1st are listed, but with no pitchers. The April 30th page lists all the games with final scores. If I try to sim the games on the May 1st page, the game will crash. I think what is happening is that part of the game thinks it's May 1st, but another part thinks it is Apr. 30th. I've repeated this experiment a couple of times, and the error always happens at the very end of the month. Once, by simming a month at a time, it crashed at the end of April, but when I restarted the game I was able to continue on, but then it crashed at the end of May, and then I got the same type of error and couldn't go forward. So, my question is, has anyone else tried this in OOTP3, and if so, did you have crashes at the end of the month? Also, has anyone tried this in OOTP4? If so, how did it work out there? I'm just curious to know if this workaround actually works or not... BTW, here is the error message that comes up when OOTP3 crashes at the end of April: OOTP3 caused an invalid page fault in module OOTP3.EXE at 0177:005e816e. Any suggestions or comments from those who have tried this greatly appreciated.

Bump.
Okay, if no one has tried this before, could you try it out for me on a test league? I just want to know if the crash at the end of the month is true for everyone or if it's just a glitch on my system. Thanks.

I am probably missing something here, but why not just create 2 leagues with an interleague schedule? Call them leagues, divisions, or associations, but wouldn't that get you what you are going for?

Yes, I know that is the other way of working around it, but like I said, I remember someone here mentioning the empty second league idea and I wanted to see if that would work. I can't remember who suggested it, but I'm pretty sure I saw it in the forums here.
Besides, by using a second empty league, it allows one to eventually expand by creating a second, rival league, not unlike the MLB's history. So, I'd just like to know if everyone experiences the end of the month crash or if it's just me. And if the same thing happens in OOTP4. |

I was going to try it last night, but I got 'busy' all of the sudden. I might get around to trying it tonight (in OOTP4 only).

Thanks! Let me know how it works for you.
In OOTP 3 it works fine, right up until the last game of the last day of the month, then it crashes when it finishes simming the game. Even if you sim the games on that last day one at a time it'll still crash with the last game. It's too bad, as other than that it works fine, as far as I can tell... |

I'm testing it right now actually, 2 leagues, 2 divisions per league.
League 1 has 4 teams in each division, League 2 has none. I decided not to schedule an All-Star Game because I thought it might create problems (trying to pick players from both leagues), so I'll try it that way first, if it works, I'll test with the All-Star Game.

Doesn't look like it works, crashed on the last game of the regular season. Just a window came up and said OOTP4 has caused an error, or something like that. I'm going to try again with a short 30 day schedule, to see if it was a fluke (I don't want to sim a full 162 game season again).
Edit - Maybe things are getting better since from what I understand, it crashed on the last game of the first month before, at least it gets to the end of the season now. ![]() [ March 29, 2002: Message edited by: hellfrozeover ]</p>

I tried it again with 3 divisions in one league, all the different options turned off, watching the last game play, still have the problem. I am going to try one last thing before I go to sleep.
By the way this is with a 24game schedule designed so that the season doesn't end at the end of the month. Edit - Interesting thing, usually when the game crashes, when I open the league up again the league leaders and stuff get screwed up, but this time it didn't, everything looked normal. The other thing is that it showed the last game of the regular season as being completed, but I didn't see any playoff games in the schedule so I tried to sim season but it crashed again. Okay I've tried everything from replay mode to reduced ratings, no financials, 4 teams, 1 division, etc. etc., I can't get it to sim past the last game of the season. I guess though it's a small improvement if, as you say, you used to not be able to sim through a month. I was a bit disappointed the first time since it was working so well. Oh well....hope this helps you. If you want me to test anything else feel free to ask. I always have time...

Wow, thanks for your efforts!
Well you did get a bit further in OOTP4 than I did in OOTP3. I had tried a full 154 game season, with two 6 team divisions in the first league, and the second league empty, and no All-Star Game. If I had to guess, in OOTP4 I would say it's probably crashing because the game wants to schedule the playoffs, but it can't find all the teams it expects (or wants). Ah well, it was worth a try. I appreciate your efforts, thanks. If I do think of any else to test, I will definitely let you know. Now, if there was only a utility that would let one import a complete league, with all its teams, players, records, etc., instead of only being able to import individual players... |
