Is it possible for a non-boxing fan to enjoy?
I have downloaded the demo and I think the user interface is amazing and the options are great. However, I have no interest for boxing in real life. I used to watch a Tyson fight here and there, but I don't get into it too much. Is it possible for me to get into this game without being fan of boxing? I am just asking for a personal opinion here and I know there is no right or wrong answer. Just wanted to gather the thoughts of some true boxing fans.

You know what? I'm not much of a boxing fan either. That said, the game looks good enough that I've actually considered getting it recently myself.

If you enjoyed the bouts you watched--if you found yourself being drawn in--then you will enjoy Title Bout. The fights are exciting, and you can stage an almost infinite number of "What If" matches--Ali vs. Jack Johnson, Benny Leonard vs. Ray Leonard, Old George Foreman vs. Young George Foreman. You don't have to know much more than the headlines of boxing history to derive great fun from such matchups.
And if you play other sports sims--if you enjoy creating alternate sporting universes, that is--then you won't be able to get enough of Title Bout. You can replay boxing history from its "modern" beginnings (ca. 1892). The problem, in fact, could be that Title Bout will *make* you into a boxing fan.

Good question! I will tell you this, growing up, I never cared much for pro boxing. My younger brother watched it more than I did. Then in the late 70's we got TitleBout one X-mas & were hooked on the game & then wanted to watch real fights to know who was who in the boxing world. TB made me a boxing fan.

Yeah, I have found that I have gotten more interested in a particular sport just by playing the video game version. I guess it's coming into the sport from the 'backdoor', but it works.

At one time they used to show a lot of boxing on TV, i think it was Tuesday evenings. It lasted about 1 hour.
Many young men loved it and fell in the love with the sport, and became boxing fans. Now we have sometime a 3 hour show, and during that time we have to listen to a guy boring all but the most dedicated fan with an hour of consistent babbling, this is not the way to draw in the more casual fan. Hence our beloved boxing is fast becoming a minor sport. Years ago if you asked 10 strangers in the street who the HW Champion was 8 out of ten could tell you, Now 5 out of ten might give you the right answer but i bet 4 out of the 5 would only tell you Lewis. Don't even bother to ask them the Champions in the other divisions a total waste of time. Plus often when they did show it on TV its Friday or weekend, not even to me does that make any sense. Where are the young men Friday night and Weekends -- out enjoying others things. No wonder boxing is in the doldrums. Put it back on normal TV, show a decent fight, not to long a program, maybe Tuesday or Wednesday evenings and get guys on there who know boxing and can do a good job of drawing in the viewer and there is just a chance they might be able to encourage young men to once again take up the sport. or at the very least become fans. Try it guys you might just find once you understand it more, you might become fans.

If you have ESPN classic sports network Tues. has boxing. You'll see a lot of fights from the 50's, 60's and 70's. I suggest getting a big boxing history book. You can them for about $25 in borders books. There are different editions with pictorials covering every weight division since the beginning of boxing. It's easy reading and you'll be a boxing expert when you're done.

Wildhawke - things just havent been the same since the demise of Sportsnight on a wednesday and the rise of the satellite TV channels.
Also, for me, Harry Carpenter was THE voice for boxing |

I don't watch boxing. I don't know who the current HW champ is. Frankly, I could care less.
However, I purchased this game based on some previous experience with boxing sims, and I love it! Personally the role-playing aspects, that are being added eventually, will make the game for me. Right now I just enjoy setting up fights and watching 2 guys beat the crap out of each other. I just got ahold of the role-playing rules mentioned in another post and I'm sure they will also add to the experience. |

I find it hard to believe that you don't know who the HW champion of the world is. . .I bet if I offered a $1,000 bucks, you'd spit the answer quickly.
Personally, unlike most, I don't feel a non-boxing fan would enjoy this game. But Rob says he does, and I'm not going to deny him that. I'd wait anyway to see a patch or two before I jumped. I purchased out of respect for what the Trunzo's are trying to do here (and with the hope of some fixes/additions) but I'm not that impressed with the setup of the program. Asbestos suit on-------fan boys can flame all they like, I'm just trying to be honest here.

If anyone flames you for stating an opinion about a game that you bought and paid for then they are just spoiled. As long as it stays within the realm of offering your honest opinion and doesn't extend out into making attempts at upsetting others than there shouldn't be anything wrong with that.

I'm from Texas, so I was raised on Football. In 1992 I bought the first EASports version of NHL Hockey and have been a rabid fan of the sport since.
Recently, I have gotten more interested in Soccer because of CM4/CM03-04. I have been a FIFA World Cup follower since the 80s but I had a somewhat skewed view of the sport itself. I always thought of the regional professional leagues (English Premiere, etc...) as sort-of akin to a AA Baseball league here in the U.S. ( just a training ground for the "real-deal" World Cup). I have since realized that (by playing the games) those leagues are the "real-deal" and that the World Cup is just a diversion to attain worldwide bragging rights. Soccer is truly far superior to any U.S. Sport in terms of fan support and salaries. I have also realized that the promotion-demotion league model that most countries use for Soccer is also superior to American Sports. **Before the flames start, please note that I still enjoy ALL American sports more than soccer, except for baseball maybe** Boxing... I don't know a thing about it, but I bought this game after playing the demo. There has been some negative feedback in the text-sim community about the lack of career mode in this game. Actually, I think the approach is pretty fresh. In the FBB games I own a basketball team. In FOF2k4 I own a football team. In this game I own boxing... all of it. The replay possibilities are pretty limitless. |

In another setting, with actual $$$ on the line, I'd probably phone-a-friend or at least use a 50-50

I'm not much of a boxing fan, but I am liking this game so far. Why? Because it isn't real boxing with all its attendant hype, hypocrisy and corruption. I can set up fights I want to happen without worrying about contracts, ducking opponents, prison, etc.
Now that I read that paragraph, I'm either a crotchedy old man or an Alice in Wonderland idealist. Ouch!

pulpfact,
You should keep in mind that the results of a fight depend on both the accuracy of the sim model and the accuracy of the ratings given to the fighters. You should not be reluctant to change a fighter's rating if the results of numerous fights just don't seem to be right. We Title Fight veterens do it all the time. |
