KC Royals making HUGE aquisitions

Just heard they are close to signing Matt Stairs, Benito Santiago, and Raul Mondesi. They really need to let Beltran go and play for a contender.

It's not that they won't let him go, his idiot for an agent (aka Boras) won't even listen to an extension offer from the new team, so everyone knows he's a 1 year rental.

How exactly is Boras an idiot ? there's a market out there for Beltran next year- count on it....

As for santiago, in my dreams, the Royals sign him before dec 7- more likely they won't.

I wouldn't exactly call Stairs, Santiago, and Mondesi HUGE. I like Santiago as a solid, veteran catcher. Stairs is a decent DH, and Mondesi has been a problem child wherever he went. Sometimes looks great, frequently doesn't. He still has that great arm, but not sure if the motivation to do everything else required in the field is there. With all the great FAs available, I gotta think they could do a little better. Santiago is a good, affordable pickup though. I'd definitely be all over him if I had a need.

Santiago is old.....and that isn't the best acquisition the Royals could get, I hope the don't get him. He would be a waste... unless they want him there to train someone.

Bleah....I hate the idea of Santiago at KC.

Yep, Santiago's about finished. Of course, they said that three years ago, and he's been OK for the Giants... better than OK even. But he was really starting to fade down the stretch. At his age, he's probably best suited to be a backup for a team with a young, good catcher who's still got some learning to do.

The Marlins have offered him a two-year contract guaranteeing him approximately $15 million. Boras hasn't countered that offer. But Rodriguez and Boras have been telling teams they're looking for a five-year deal for more than $10 million a year.

I have also heard some stupid quotes about Millwood and Maddux and how much they are worth.

Oh, and of course, the all famous "Bernie hasn't lost a thing" about Bernie Williams being moved out of CF. "I'd love to see the foot race between Matsui and Bernie". Uhh, even my 8 year old can see that Bernie has been slowed by injuries you freakin moron!!

Oh yeah, here's Millwood..

It is believed the offer is between $9 million and $10 million a year. However, Millwood's agent, Scott Boras, has been telling teams they're looking for $13 million per year over 5-7 years. Boras has yet to respond to Philadelphia's offer.

5-7 years .. now that's funny stuff.

I bet A-Rod ,Kevin Brown, Bernie Williams among others don't think he's an idiot

Back on the subject those 3 players would do good for KC. Its nice to see a small market team get some players.

Actually Boras does have a point with Irod, and claimed his counter offer was 10 x 4.

Quote:
"They brought him to Florida at a wage of $10 million," Boras said, "and following a season of world championship play and leadership, he made the decision today to let the Marlins know that despite the fact that his teammates got increases, he was willing to accept a contract where his salary remained the same and he would take the same term of years Mike Lowell received. He was willing to be flexible about how the money was to be paid out during the contract."

From the article I read, he was looking for a raise. If he's looking for the same amt for a long term deal, I could see that.

As for if those players think he's an idiot or not, that'll depend on where they land and for how much. I highly doubt anyone is gonna ink Millwood to a 5-7 year deal.

I wouldn't sign I-Rod to more than 2 years, and I can't imagine any GM in baseball would be stupid enough to either.

...or if you decide to sign IRod to more than 2 years the team that signs him better make sure that they figure out a way to pay most of the salary upfront/early on in the contract rather than backloading it.

I didn't say they should sign him for 4 years or that anyone will give it to him, I just meant Boras did have a case.

What is funnier, 13 mil per year for a guy who has pitched like a 3 starter or 5-7 years? I wish mlb teams would boycott negotiations with his players.

Isn't it silly to comment on the bargaining process? We should just look at the results and see if Ivan Rodriguez and Kevin Millwood would be overpaid. Everyone would make requests that sound stupid in any bargaining process. Boras is just more willing to share those with the media. Remember what's the market for Rodriguez last year? If Boras can land him anything above 8~9 mil, then he's doing a great job. That 10 mil one year deal was already a success, since Rodriguez got above market value contract for a year, and happened to be doing great with a successful team.

If I could do as well as Boras and got called an idiot, I wouldn't mind.

I'm pretty sure the word HUGE was being used faceitously in the thread title.

I disagree with this 100%. This is just the same old case of a small-market team signing crappy players just because they used to be good, and it's not at all nice to see, especially when you root for said small-market team.

But for what it's worth, Santiago would still be an upgrade over Brent Mayne, as sad as that may seem.

I agree. The players mentioned are well past their prime.

These players are not really bad. I think we'd need to know the price before making any comments. At least Matt Stairs should be cheap?
