Damn Career Ending Injuries....

Brian Ehrlich(CF) - Age 32 .316 avg, 422 homers (11 years, 9 time all-star). Salary 12,050,000. I coveted this guy for years but could never pry him away from his teams and was not able to outbid him in free agency, I was always near the salary cap (I have finished the last 12 years in first or second and have won 5 ABA Championships.)

I traded away 1 (5-star) Pitcher (24-8, 3.17), 1 (4-star) Pitcher (17-12, 2.84), 1 (3.5-star) CF (.322-23-112, 40SB), and two minor leaguers (2 star players) to FINALLY GET this GUY!!!!. First year with me he hits .366-52-156 (156 rbi still stands as the all time high) then with 1 week to go until the playoffs he gets the DREADED CAREER OVER - Augh!!! I traded 4 very good players away for this guy looing to build for the near future and then BAM - Career Over at age 32....

Question - Was it stupid to give up so much for this guy and have others out there ever seen such bad luck.......

I hear ya...I went out and spent $10 mill on a pitcher, only to see him go down half way through his first season with me to the dreaded CEI.

And to answer your question, it does seem like alot...but what if his career wasn't over? What if he was producing for you and getting you more titles? Would all be worth it then, right?

I wouldn't have given up that much for a 32 yeard old guy. But I guess thats the risk you take.

This is, I think, my only complaint with OOTP. Is there really a CEI anymore? Other than the Tony Saunders or Tom Browning who breaks his arm throwing (why does it only happen to leftys? another thread I suppose). But rotator cuff injuries, torn ligiments. A guy can come back, maybe at reduced effectivness, maybe even better (see Matt Morris). But the CEI doesn't seem to be around anymore.

It sucks. I'm also going to say it sounds like a bad trade, giving up two pitchers who had combined to win almost 40 games and a CF who was no slouch. You put all your eggs into one basket, and the basket broke. Oops.

Yeah, when I made the trade I needed to dump salary - I was at 84.8 mill on a 85 mill cap. I gave up the two pitchers (17 mil total-one was 35 and the other 36) and a CF that was making 4.6 that would have no value to me since the new player would take his spot....I dumped 22 mill and took on 12 mil. I also had a 5 star starter in the minors that took the place of one of the starters and I had a 1 star starter that did well for the second pitcher - total salary 600k.

Erlich did do well in the season for me and I did win the championship but the next two years I was in rebuilding mode - finishing 4th and 2nd- both years I did sign free agents and am doing well in the 3rd year since the injury.....Funny thing the year I finished fourth my total payroll was only 67 million so I guess I did save 17 mill with the loss and I have been able to replace the CF position for 4.6 mill.

I don't think that I would make the same choice again, regardless of the players skills....you never know about the CEI...

One final note is that this game sure is addicting - I got the game in August and I have played 6 different Leagues, with over 85 years simmed between them.....

Career enders can really suck. I had a future hall of fame starting pitcher go down at 31 years old. He had just hit 2000 IP and was well on his way to the hall of fame. To make matters worse he had a 22mil contract which I had to pay for 90% of the season.

I had a future HoFer go down woith a career-ending injury once. He was 40, so I didn't complain too much... I mean, he did win 372 games before going down

The added info you gave here makes the trade look better than it did in your 1st post. You dumped two guys OLDER and with higher salaries and a player you weren't going to use. That combined with the fact you were going to have to reduce salary anyways, and it actually looks like a good deal. It should have worked out, just bad luck.

Had a team in my league take a big 5* player in the ammy draft, his first round pick (#2 or 3 overall)... his rookie year in A Ball suffered a CEI.

I think that's what makes OOTP one of the best games around....you just never know.

In my current dynasty, the Radom Chaos League , both Babe Ruth and Stan Musial were lost to CEI.

Luckily, neither of them were on my team

I'd love to see an injury in OOTP6 that was longer than a year - something like a torn labrum that takes 22 months or whatever to heal, and occasionally something else that lasts 2 years. That would be somewhat more accurately reflective of modern medicine when a lot of guys do come back but it takes a long time.

Well, I was hoping never to have to post in this thread but here goes. I took over my beloved Pittsburgh Pirates of 1960 because I'm a HUGE Clemente fan. Anyway, 1960, two games up in late July and down goes my #2 SP Harvey Haddix, C-E-I! Desperate, I make a trade for Johnny Podres to round out my rotation. We end up missing the playoffs by five games as Podres wins two and loses 6 for me.

1961 now, one back in June, down goes Clemente with a broken knee, C-E-I!!! I've now lost my star. I put together a patchwork outfield and here comes late July again, dead heat for first. Johnny Podres and his 14-2 record go down for 10 weeks. I send half of my prospects out of town to bring in rookie 'Sudden' Sam McDowell, hoping he can keep us afloat. We miss the playoffs by four.

Now I'm scared to see what 1962 brings . . .
