I've tried it for about 50 times already. I guess it must have something to do with the system configuration. |

Using AOL? Using Netscape or IE? All these answers may point to the solution .

I'm having the same problem, with the setup file and the demo. I'm using Windows 98 with a cable modem along with AOL. I use download accelerator. I use IE as well. Yes, I also have Winzip.

There is a known issue with downloading large files via the AOL browser, but that issue causes incomplete downloads and this is a different problem (expected file size=190MB). BTW, the #1 solution for that different issue is to download the file using the IE browser.
After a quick google search I see that many other non-OOTP software users are having this same problem, so we know it is unrelated to the game. I just downloaded and started 2 of the full install files (from 2 different DL sites at www.ootp4.com) and they both worked fine so that is not it either. So far this problem seems to have stumped everyone on the net so here are my suggestions in the order I would try: 1. Clear out the windows TEMP directory, open the IE browser, empty out the browser cache, and try the download again. 2. If using a special download accelerator program like gozilla etc. don't, and try the download with IE after clearing your windows/temp directory and your browser cache. Many sites don't allow using those types of apps as it is a strain on their server and that may be causing a uniquely corrupted file. 3. If you had the demo of the game installed before downloading then completely uninstall that version before trying to install the one you just downloaded (hope that makes sense). 4. According to a user named "Itchy" at the Impressions games support forums: "There are very few reasons for that error to occur; if you've modified the game .exe or are using a modified game .exe (often from a cracked copy), this error message will occur. In other words, the game files were probably tampered with, thus causing the problem. " Don't worry, I'm not accusing anyone here but if any reader seeing this is using a cracked copy of the game that is what the guy at Impressions said (copy/paste). 5. Next up is doing some basic system maintenance duties like a full virus scan and a disk scan (for disk errors). Don't want to panic you but a common symptom of many system virus's are unexpected file sizes so this actually may be it. It still seems like a longshot though as working viruses are fairly uncommon. 6. Next up is operating system issues. Some of the game users (again, non-OOTP related) that complained of this problem also mentioned system issues - not sure if that could be it though, seems unlikely to me hence it is #6 .Good luck guys and if anyone solves this please post the solution. Non-OOTP software users who search for this error will appreciate the answer as well. |

Dola - I think this support answer is for a file that is smaller than expected but it may still apply:
What is the exact error message? Could not initialize installation. File size expected=..., size returned=.... Answer: The file is corrupted. That means delete the version you have downloaded, clear your browser cache and windows/temp directory, download the file again, and complain to AOL .

Okay, I don't know if you guys still need any help downloading, but I will put in my two cents. Try and download the setup file from the FTP server. I have no idea why this works (I don't even know what FTP means), but I received the same message when trying to download the game, and it worked for me. It has also been known to work for other people. Good Luck.
--I would like to ask some of the more computer savvy players (which, compared to me, is anyone ) their opinions on why downloading from the FTP works for some people?

Less manipulation of the files, etc is what I'm trying to say here. I may be way off base with this, but I figure the easiest way to have my misconception corrected would be to post it 2 smilies in one post, blech Jon |

No, I'm trying to install on Windows 98. I also tried to download from the ftp site, and got the same error. Maybe someone with a fast connection could send me the install file(s) through e-mail? I have a cable modem, but I also have AOL, but I tried downloading through IE, and it didn't work. My personal e-mail address is anfhockey07@aol.com . Thank You

AOL users feel free to join in here as I have no idea how AOL works specifically, but I think you open up AOL, then open up the Internet Explorer web browser, then download the file from the IE web browser. Follow the suggestions above (clear windows/temp and your web browser cache) before the download, and also DISABLE your download accelerator. Many download excelerator programs are set up to handle ALL your downloads, so you will have to go out of your way to disable the download accelerator before downloading. I think it is the download accelerators fault here actually, that is what the expected 190MB error sounds like. Good luck. |

The transfer method may be different as well, I'm just not sure about that. I have had some pull your hair out DNS issues with various ISP's, and part of the frustration is the problems can be regional - meaning the guy in NYC can download your updated file while the guy in Santa Cruz sees the old file no matter how much he refreshes or flushes his cache.Whatever this particular problem the user mentions is it is fortunately rare. 2 Impressions games "Cleopatra" users reported the issue too, & maybe only a dozen other examples via google search. |

Have you tried all the suggestions here? I don't think anyone else is having this problem (if anyone is - please be vocal in this thread ).
