new to the game
Love the game and have been playing nonstop. However, I still am second guessing that I am getting the most of the excitement of setting up custom leagues. Some of the questions I have would be a recommended set up for someone new to OOTP and playing solo. Right now I am playing with fictional players starting with 2003. Still fuzzy on the difference between type of players you can use. I here a lot about the LAHMAN database and haven't used it yet. Any pointers on a league setup would be great. First year I am flirting with last place so I advice would be super.

There are custom roster sets you can use. I think they are all for real players. You can find these in the Mods section...
As far as the league set up goes, it is entirely up to you. If you want only a few teams or you want a 40 team league you can do that. I think the game is more fun when you import your own graphics. They're are a bunch of fictional player photos you can download from the mods section. League totals won't impact how good your team is. just the league overrall. If you play out your games then do a search for what types of situations you should use. (ie. man on 3rd less than 2 outs, you want to Pitch-->Infield In. Search for "Infield In" or something and that should help. |

![]() As for league setups, the beauty of OOTP is you can do just about anything you want! I prefer to play fictional leagues (custom) as you are doing now. You have no preconcived notions of the players and they can become your own little universe. As for the Lahman database, if you would like to try a historc league you can go to http://www.baseball1.com and download the latest version of the database, allowing you to import the history of baseball to be replayed to your heart's content. Just keep in mind that things will change, OOTP is meant as an alternate universe not a replay of history. A great resource for all things OOTP is the FAQ board on this site. There are FAQ's on a variety of topics that can be of great use to the new user (and old hand like me). ![]() Also, I recommend doing some searches using the Search button in the top right corner of the message board, you'll be amazed at the information and nonsense included in this place. Here's a great link for ideas and setups for fictional leagues. I would recommend spending some time setting up your fictional leagues! Put logos in for your teams, write a background story fo how it was formed, and research the players on all the teams before you even play a game! The immersion factor can be huge if you take your time setting up a league. Also, I personally like to start small (16 or 18 teams) with my fictional leagues as it really allows for getting to know the players. Finally, please always feel free to ask any questions you may have about anything OOTP related, we're here to help!

And remember...when using real players...always trade for Ross Gload.

When I got this game, I started with GeForce's 2003 roster set as it helped me to use actual players to be familiar with the players and their abilities. Now I'm up to 2007 and fictional players are starting to work their way up to the majors. I generally play out about 1/2 my games and sim the rest. I recommend using real players at first. It helped me get into the game more quickly that I think it would have with fictitious players. There's always something special about beating Pedro or striking out Bonds in a critical situation.
Enjoy the game! |
