New to logo making, could someone help me out with this..

Im using Adobe Photoshop and cant seem to figure out how to outline text in another color or do a shadow effect.

Could someone outline the RICHMOND in this logo with black (not pure of course)? If possible could you try it with a shadow effect on the lettering as well? Im trying to get the text to stand out more and want red with black trim or shadow as the colors. Thanks for your help.

Okay, type in your text (in this case, just type Richmond), then press enter when you're finished. Next, go to Layer>Blending Options. To put a color outline around the text, go to the very bottom, where it says "Stroke," and check it. You can then play around with the settings. To add a shadow, you actually have the option to add an inner or outer shadow. I'll assume you want an outer shadow. Just click where it says "Drop Shadow," and again, you can play with the settings. I'm pretty good with Photoshop, so if you have more questions, just ask.

Ok, Im still having problems. It for some reason will not let me use the blending option. Is this because the image is partially locked?

You need to copy/paste the link into the address bar. Tripod does not allow direct linking to images.

Not sure what you mean by "partially locked." You should be able to just type in some text, hit enter, then go into blending options.

For some reason it tells me that the layer is locked and there is a lock icon on it. This prevents me from using the blending option. In fact everything under the layer pull down is grey and unusable. My version must be different.

I'm checking right now to see what could be causing that.

Okay, I don't know why your layers are locked, but all you need to do is unlock them. If your Layers window is not already open, go to Windows>Layers, and then just click on the lock (see attachment) to unlock the layers.

Yeah, Im using 7.0 as well. Im not sure what the deal is. Everything including that lock button you just pointed out is grey and unclickable. Nothing lets me unlock it. Ive even tried reinstalling the program. Weird. I guess Ill have to find another way to put text on my logos.

I think I got it! I hit 'duplicate layer' and it gave me a copy of the other one which allows me to edit the layer. Thanks alot for your help Dbacks.

Hey, no problem. Even though I didn't have the solution, glad to hear you fixed it. I'll remember that. I never would have thought to duplicate the layer. Let me know how the blending options work for you.
