Need help changing debut years in Ankit DB

I want to create an edited version of the Ankit database where all the players debuted in reverse order.

Example: All the 2002 rookies would debut in 1901....2001 rookies in 1902....2000 rookies in 1903, etc... so their debut years matched up in Batting, Pitching, Fielding and their subsequent seasons were adjusted accordingly.

Is there a simple command in Excel to make this much less labor intensive? I know the basics, but I'm not too sure I want to do this if it will take weeks of typing.

HELP

I know Joe Cronin was doing the same thing for a league he suggested. Maybe he can help.

1. Copy the column of debut years
2. Resort by debut year in reverse order
3. Paste column from #1 over the new debut year column

Should work.

Thanks for the suggestion....I assume you mean to do that to the Master file. Maybe I'm missing something, but how would that affect the subsequent seasons? Or the pitching, batting and fielding files? Somehow I would need to adjust the date of birth as well.

Does anyone else think this is skipping a couple steps?

I have done almost the same thing using Visual FoxPro, but it didnt turn out exactly like I had hoped, but I may still work on it.

I took the database and chopped it down to only 1903-2002 (im pretty sure thats the dates I used). Then I used 1952 as a halfway point, and reversed the debut years. So if a player debuted in 2002 in real life, they now debut in 1903. If a player debuted in 1955 in real life, they now debut in 1949, etc......I also changed the birthdays to be correct.

This worked out very well, except that the players career stats are now reversed also. In other words, Babe Ruth debutes in 1990, but that is using his RL stats from his LAST RL season. The in 1991, he would use his next to last RL stats.

I may be off by a year with the date range I used. I believe it was 1903-2002. I may still try and come up with a way to have the RL stats stay in the same order, but the years still reversed.

The problem with doing this in Excel comes when you have over 16000+ records (dont know the exact cutoff for Excel off the top of my head) like in the fielding file. This would be much easier to do with a career based database, where everyone only has 1 batting/pitching/field (per position) record. I have created most of a career based database (all but the fielding file which I may borrow from the one thats already floating around), but it is based on the Lahman database and not Ankits modified database.

Well, I got the Master, batting, and pitching files finished, keeping the correct chronological order of stats for each player, but flipping the debut year (Cobb in 1998 instead of 1905 or something like that). That fielding file is a bear though Ill have to give more thought into that file. If I ever finish this up, Ill let you know
