Steve Lyons vs Al Leiter: Wrestling Match

It's going to happen eventually. Leiter's going to get so fed up with Lyons' inane dribbling, pot shots and wanna be baseball knowledge that he's going to pile drive him. And I hope he does, SOMEONE needs to shut that idiot UP.

Especially Morgan... great player, poor commentary.

I was suprised at Leiter's annoncing ability. I actually like him. He's smart, doesn't talk too much, and doesn't have Tony Gwynn's voice.

I actually like Mccarver... his voice is interesting, and he always has something to say.

I'm surprised at how good Leiter is doing too. He's never been a particularly great player, but I really like him as an announcer. He doesn't babble incoherently like mccarver or break out the baseball ego like morgan. When he does speak he has something tangible to add to the play by play. I definitely hope he plans on doing this as a full time job somewhere.

I agree. Leiter is refreshing. He's probably a bit more 'in tune' with today's players. More so than Joe "Mumbles" Morgan, Tim "Meely-Mouth' McCarver, and Steve "Lame Lungs" Lyons.

Leiter, may be older, but at least he's still in the game.

I like him, so far.

I like Leiter, and I think Boone's not so bad either. There were times I wanted the current player announcers to tell Lyons & McCarver to shut their pieholes.

They should bring Boone's dad in and have him take on McCarver in a play-by-play duel to the death. Facemasks and shin guards optional.

Al Leiter is good?

Next thing you know people will say Jamie Moyer is good.

(yeah I have a problem remembering these guys became decent pitchers after being horrible for 10 years)

Um. Career ERA+ of 116 or better, K/B ratio lifetime 1.82 despite being a wild pitcher, K/9 ratio lifetime of 7.63, does not give up too many HR, and a 145-112 lifetime W-L (.564) for the traditionalist in you. And yes, he did take 7-8 years to figure it out, which makes his success improbable, not invalid.

As for Moyer, the 200 wins he's going to rack up for his career against 140 some losses, plus incredible success in the past 3 years despite poor K/9 and while giving up a few dingers, 126-52 since 1996 is - well let's just say that while I don't have the support-neutral stats in front of me, his .692 winning pct (vs team .559) is awfully high to be all luck. Safeco has helped him, yes. Doesn't help Freddy Garcia.

You'd have a better argument saying they're not great pitchers, than saying they're not good.
