Giles to Padres is official

http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=1603146

I'm actually suprised no one put a waiver claim on him. Then again, I suppose they would figure they were just delaying the inevitable.

They didn't get Nady in the deal? I guess they couldn't convince SD to take Kendall either. Too bad. At least he didn't go to the Yankees like I thought he would.

I am trying to figure out if the Padres paid more or less than what the Pirates were rumored to be asking from the Dodgers in July. The report then was that the Pirates wanted Odalis Perez and one of either of LA's top pitching prospects. Instead, they got another pitcher with initials O.P. (Oliver Perez), a prospect I am not familiar with, and a player to be named. Odalis seems to have more upside then Oliver although Oliver is three years younger.

Giles has been a heck of a hitter for some bad teams but enters next year as a 33 year old.

I bet the fact that Kendall wasnt in the deal must upset alot of gm's. Since they were saying if you want Giles you must also take Kendall. I'm sure if it was just Giles involved more managers would of made a run for him.

There aren't that many teams below San Diego on the priority list... at least I don't think...

San Diego had the number 1 waiver priorty when Giles was "waived" (not exactly sure why Detroit was not at the top of the list, unless perhaps they had just already said they had no plans of putting in a claim for Giles) because it was constantly mentioned that even if a deal wasn't worked out by July 31st then he probably still would be traded since SD had first dibs on a waiver claim.

Detroit couldn't afford Giles what with Higginson clogging up their payroll

My understanding is that he would be waived through the NL first, then the AL since he's being waived by an NL team. Detroit would have had first chance in the AL but obviously Giles didn't make it that far.

And I'd bet that with Kendall in the deal Pittsburgh nets next to nothing in return. Why on earth would anyone give up useful prospects when you get Kendall the Albatross?

SoxWin is correct (man, that's hard to say about a Red Sox fan ). Teams in the same league as the waived player have priority.

Jason Bay looks pretty good. Has power both power and speed and has a 400 OBP in the PCL.

Bay is an excellent pickup in this deal. Not bad work by the Pirates here. They surely wouldn't have gotten these guys if Kendall was included. Better, given the Pirates situation, to get the prospects back and suck up having Kendall back there for as long as you have to.

Kendall has said in the past that if Giles is traded he wants to be traded. Hopefully, he is smart enough to understand that he will HAVE to renegatiate that insane contract if he wants to be moved.

And the players union will fight this with all they have.

I'm sure he's good and all but do keep in mind the PCL is a HUGE hitters league

True, but he's hit at every level in the minors, starting in the Midwest league in 2001 through his run in the Mets system last year in both the Florida State and Eastern Leagues.

I think he's solid. Don't expect Giles-lite, but I think he'll hit.

Giles will definately be a welcome addition to the Padres I think. His offense is something SD needs but there not going anywhere. They'll could end up just trading him anyway next year for pitching.

Tony Gwynn says "On the Pirates' side of this deal, it looks like they're trying to unload salary"

uh, thanks Tony.

It does look like the Pirates got some value, but does anyone else find it a little hard to believe that they couldn't have done better for Giles, one of the better hitters in the game?
