Question How in the heck do you win the World Series?

I'm playing with a 16-team fictional league, two 8-team conferences each with two divisions of four. Cash set at $25 million, no cap, and I usually have among the best coaches and scouts.

Year 1 - World Series. Up 3 games to 2. Lose Games 6 & 7 at home.

Year 2 - World Series. Up 3 games to 2. Lose Game 6 on the road. Game 7 - Up 5-0 in the 7th, 5-3 in the 9th with 2 outs, give up a 3-run HR to lose.

Year 3 - World Series. Swept to defending champions.

Year 4 - World Series. Up 3 game to 2. Lose Games 6 & 7 on the road to two-time champions who have just three-peated (if that's a word).

I've tried everything, I think but just can't win the big one. Pitching/speed/defense, power, patience/OBP. I've had a MVP and back-to-back Cy Young winners and usually the best bullpen every year that seems to crack despite no players that "suffer" in clutch situations.

I just don't know what to do anymore...

your not the RedSox are you?

Keep plugging away at it, the fact that you are in the series each year says something.

Welcome back Steve. You missed a lot. Oh, Puritan your team seems to be doing great. You can't win the world series every year. You can't lose it every year either. So just keep trying. Eventually you will get through.

Do you manage the games...just curious? I'd add a good defensive player for the bench and consider moving my extra starting pitcher(s) into the 'pen as the series progresses. Good luck this year...

re: how do I win the World Series?

Stop playing against the Yankees!!!

Seriously, you might try the DBack's tactic in 2001...work your best starters to death!!

Thanks, guys. I'm not using real MLB teams, just fictional teams.

Year 1 and 2 were mainly older players, so the roster in Year 4 is quite the turnover from the initial draft.

I don't manage the games, but I watch the final series. I set my lineup and rotation/bullpen before every game, based on the stats and hot/cold streaks.

I always put my three best starters (based on the year's statistics) in the 3-man rotation. Everyone else is available in the pen.

I play talent only so mainly go by stats. I may have a 2.5 star pitcher who is only "Average" across the board in the eyes of my scout, but he's 21-7 with a 3.23 ERA so he'll definitely be one of the three.

Any rumors you hear of people winning the World Series are nothing more than urban legends.

Year one, you've just built your team, so you probably have no real home-field advantage (since you haven't been able to draft tons of speed-demons for your cavernous park, or ground-ball pitchers for your bandbox).

Year two, man, you need a better closer.

From then on, I think homefield advantage might make a difference. Win more in the regular season!!

Keep in mind that home field advantage means far, far less in OOTP than in real life. It's a problem that will hopefully be fixed in the future.

Make sure you're not managing the Red Sox, Cubs, Braves or Phillies (if the Yankees lose again this year, they might be added to this list).

I did it my third year managing the Detroit Tiger in Total Minors. I sacrificed power for walks and batting average (to a lesser extent), and went mostly after pitchers who did not give up walks themselves. I stole a lot and hit and run a lot.

You scored a hundred runs? And the game handled that okay?

<sigh> O for 4.

One of the best pitchers in my league was left unclaimed in the off-season so I've added him on a 1-year deal. Even before adding him - weaknesses, NONE! (yeah, right).
