Texas with yet another outrageous signing
In my solo league, the Texas Rangers signed Javier Vazquez (3.5 stars mind you) to a $31.3 million contract for 7 years. Combined with A-Rod's contract (25.2 mil) and Chan Ho Park's (13 mil), they account for almost 70 million between only 3 players. Oh yeah and they're in last place in the West.
Vazquez's numbers as of 9/10/04: In 31 starts he is 13-8 with a 4.74 ERA. Struck out 121 and walked 38 in 210.2 innings while giving up 235 hits and 28 homers. The rosters I use have actual player salaries, team incomes and cash reserves. It turns out to be pretty realistic. Gary Sheffield signed with Pittsburgh for 19.5 mil (went for the money obviously) but brought Pittsburgh into 2nd place. Vladimir Guerrero signed with Minnesota for 23.3 mil. I've also found that setting the trading AI preference to "favor heavily for veterans" makes computers trade veterans for a lot of prospects which turns out more realistic. |

Are you saying $31.3 million per year? That's incredible. I've never seen the AI sign anyone for that much before.

This happens sometime if teams are on a bidding war. I had this happen when I tried to sign Ichiro Suzuki. I made an offer of $21,000,000 a year (I had a ton of money that season for free agency because I let go a number of players go the previous season) and the counter was a $26,000,000. He ended up accepting a $34,000,000 contract for 6 years from :drumroll:... Texas....

I'm using the Total Minors set but edited the player ratings, salaries and team finances to make it more realistic.
And, yes, 31.3 mil per year. |

Yep, sometimes bidding wars break out and a lucky free agent gets a huge contract.

This could really happen. John Hart has never landed a stud starter. He once said his tomb stone will read "never landed an ace". He is just the kind of GM to overpay. Again.

April 5, 2005: Javier Vazquez goes down with a torn rotator cuff. His season is over, and his ratings all drop to 4.
See scotto, it could happen.

Poor John Hart. Maybe he could land the NYY job when Cashman gets fired.

To save Hart some heartache, the Minnesota Twins GM signed Barry Zito to a 30.5 mil (or so) contract for 10 years in 2006!
This was after he was asking about 5.5 mil for 4 years so I thought I would see how far the bidding would go. I eventually got up to a 30 mil a year for 10 year offer and another team topped it. This jumped Minnesota's payroll over 100 mil in addition to the Vlad Guerrero signing in 2004. They only make about 70 mil in revenue setting up for an awful loss even if they win a ton of games. They only have 84 mil in cash reserves also compared to other teams like the Yankees (720 mil) and Atlanta (430 mil). Gotta love the greed and persistence of these GMs! |

Every league that I have seen that raises the Max cash ends up with many teams who have this ability.

I find I'm able to stroe up hundreds of millions in cash if I set the max that high. But keep in mind I'm a tightwad.

Can this problem be solved if a salary cap is implemented?

I actually do not believe a salary cap would solve this entirely unless it was a rediculously low salary cap. What you would see is teams still with high max cash limit still signing a guy to huge amount of dollars due to the amount they have to spend. They might not sign as many guys, but in my tests, the only way I have seen to control this type of AI spending on one player is by ensuring there is not a ton of extra cash floating around. With higher Max cash, the AI seems to horde from time to time (not all teams in all cases though).
