What would you do?

I have a 35 yr. old catcher who I have signed for this season and two more seasons for 6.9 mil. I checked the player development and it said that his talent in contact, home runs and avoiding walks all dropped. Using talents only. He is still listed as four stars. Is this his big drop? Should I get rid of him now instead of having to lug his contract for the next two plus years or before I can't get anything for him? I sure don't want to see the dreaded "all he does is eat $$$".

If he has been a player in your organization for his whole career, then the noble thing to do would be to keep him and let him keep playing. Let him retire on his terms.

Yeah. That's MLB's problem, not enough noble owners.

Does he have good intangibles?

If so, you have to keep him.

If not...

See what you can get for him. If you think he'll be useless before the playoffs or you know you won't be in the playoffs, get rid of him for whatever you can get. If you are headed to the playoffs, try to get equal value for him if you can. If you can't, you may want to keep him through to the end and release him then. That will cut a hole in your cash but it will free up space for the future.

Noble owners? Maybe not, but there aren't many noble players willing to take a paycut when their skills are diminshed. Ever see a guy who was injured all year offer some money back? What a riot.

This is the type of situation that the game could use a tweak or two. First off, if you have another catcher ready, dump this guy. His ratings are going to go and go soon. Next, the game could be more interesting with fan ratings for players. So if you have a 35 year old star who's been with the team several years he could have a high fan rating. When you trade him you notice a decline in fan attendence or fan interest. The game could also place more impact on team chemistry.

I traded Omar Vizquel before this season cause his hitting went down at 36 and I figured it was the beginning of the end. It made zero impact on team chemistry or fan interest. In real life the fans in Cleveland would be major POd and the team chemistry would have to suffer. It surely sufferred when Thome left.

Redondo refused salary (about $2M a year I guess) at AC Milan for 15 months when injured, and many players around the world are taking 15-20 % voluntary pay cuts to help teams in the current poor financial climate. But that's football...

Then there's Karl Malone signing with the Lakers for a very low salary.
