Fan Loyalty Question
I have been a Baltimore Orioles fan since I became interested in baseball in '86. Of all of the teams I root for, the Orioles are the only team that hasn't won a Championship while I have been fan. Being realistic, I know that the Orioles have a lot of work to do to get to a championship, if they ever do.
I get the Postgame e-mails from mlb.com letting me know what has gone on with today's game. It's a neat feature. As some of you may alreadcy know, the O's beat the Red Sox Friday and Saturday. When I have seen the postgame e-mails from mlb.com showing me this, it made me mad. Why? Because the Red Sox are the only team with a chance to win the AL East other than the damn Yankees. So, I was bothered that the Red Sox were losing to my team because I want someone else other than the Yankees to go somewhere. I would honestly take 100 years of Orioles losing if it meant that the Yankees wouldn't make the playoffs those same 100 years. So, my question to you guys is... Would you root against your favorite team in a case like this? |

I would. I would root against the Yankees in any way I could, the Orioles have no chance of knocking the Yankees out of the Playoff run, so you might as well root for a team that can. So yes you should be rooting against the Orioles in this situation. It may hurt but it would feel so much better if the Yankees don't make the playoffs. Especially after their fast start and all the Damn Yankee fans down here saying "This is the Best Yankee team ever."

Hell no.
I'm a devil rays fan. I'm one of the only Devil Ray fans I know. I hate the yankees as much as anyone. But I would ALWAYS rather see my team win, than the other team lose.

I became a baseball fan during the Pirates' 1990-1992 stretch of NLCS losses. 1992 broke my heart (I was in third grade at the time), and ever since then, I have had a seething hatred for the Atlanta Braves. But even still, I will not root for the Mets or the Expos or the Phillies or the Marlins (in the rare instances that they have a shot at beating out the Braves) when they are playing against the Pirates. I root for my Buccos first.
On a related note, even when the Pirates are hopelessly out of the division race (this usually only takes a week or two into the year), I continue to root against the Pirates' division foes, except for when they play Atlanta, although I have found myself slower to make that committment lately, as the Pirates just keep hanging on the fringe (8-10 games back, just one 5 or 6 game winning streak away from being right back in it). Also, I hate the Yankees as much as the next guy, but when the Braves and Yankees played in the World Series, I was a Yankees fan. |

Nope, I would never root against my own team.
Oh, and I share your Braves hatred. I'd much rather see the Yankees win the World Series. |

Stay Loyal, spleen.
As a die hard Yankee fan I can honestly say: this is NOT the best Yankee team ever and I don't see us winning the World Series, I'd be surprised if we made it there at all (playoffs, yes. WS, no). I hate to say it, but I don't see it. I'd love to see the Astros go all the way. |

I would never root against the Dodgers.
I would never root for the Giants in any situation, in any series, against any other team.

As a Mets fan, I can sympathize with having a favorite team that hasn't got a shot at the postseason. I can honestly say that I'd rather see the other guys beat the Mets if it meant the Braves wouldn't win the division. I mean, the Mets are going nowhere anyway, so I might as well just root against the Braves.

I'm a lifelong Indians fan. My memory of the Tribe goes as far back as the Gaylord Perry days. I would never, ever root against the Indians no matter who they are playing. While I do hate the Yankees so, I would never root for someone contending with them to beat the Indians.
But if the Indians were in contention again, I might root for the Yankees if they were playing one of our rivals for the division. It would be very difficult doing it, but I would. And I have to say there is nothing more painful to watch than a Yankees-Dodgers series. In the late 70's it was the only time in my life I rooted for the Dodgers.
