Exporting to FTP in Online Leagues

This is likely not an OOTP-issue, but I was hoping that someone familiar with LAN's and other "network" type internet configurations could be of some assistance.

Since August of 2001, I have been living in the new 2-bedroom family apartments at my university which come complete with an ethernet network connection to the university server. Last year, I participated in a couple of OOTP4/STB2K3 online leagues, and found no issues in exporting my files to the commish via FTP transmission.

However, this year in my OOTP5 leagues, I cannot get this to work. I'm being forced to send my exports through e-mail, as the "Export to FTP" feature simply causes the game to cease responding. Now I've been accused of being an impatient man before, and I am enough of an expert of this game to realize that some screens and reports take a while to open or load depending on your CPU processor.

But still, after four or five tests in this department, I have allowed OOTP5 to attempt the export for nearly half an hour with no results. I have even gone into the Online League Setup screen to "test the connection" and that works perfectly.

Sooooo, my conclusion to this is that there must be some sort of problem with how the export is being sent from "my" end. The server has obviously been designed to cut-down the ability to use "certain" file-sharing programs that have evolved over the last couple of years, but I hadn't had a problem with OOTP's online usage before recently. I was simply curious if anyone had any ideas, advice, or insight on what could be causing the issue to happen.

Firewall? Really a unique situation, but just a guess.

I meant to actually address this in the original post, but yes, I'm willing to bet that's the problem. Almost positive the campus network here has one. For instance, there are times that a messenging program pops an error message about a firewall when sending/receiving files, but usually when you just try it again it works fine. But why would it not affect me in OOTP4, and just decide to cause problems now? As I said, I exported rather freely in my OOTP4 leagues, without the slightest tinge of a problem.

My guess is that they either changed their firewall settings, or something else is just not working in the communication department between my connection & the game.

It's a bit frustrating because I don't know too terribly much about firewalls, or how to get around them. I don't even put too much stock in getting assistance from the campus office of technology department, either, lol.

Edit - When using an FTP program of my own, CuteFTP, to do some work on a website, things upload there perfectly from my computer. I know this isn't the exact same thing, but it just strikes me as odd that I can use my own FTP program, but the campus firewall would prevent me from using a different program to FTP a file to another server.

When using Cute FTP are you using passive transfer? Do we know if OOTP5 uses passive or active FTP?

That could be one reason for the failure (if OOTP5 is using active FTP through a firewall).

Single,

I've just used CuteFTP on occasion, so it's not something I'm familiar with entirely either. What are the differences between active & passive transfer in regards to FTP?

I see what you're saying that if OOTP5 uses one, and I'm using CuteFTP through another, that it could be the source of the problem, but I wouldn't know how to alter or change how to transmit differently, with CuteFTP or OOTP.
