What leagues are considered the best going? Which commishes are considered top-notch?
Thanks in advance to all who post.

Since I can't vote for any leagues I belong to (wouldn't be prudent but you know who you are) I'd vote for the XBL, even though they are currently on hiatus. I think the reputation they earned and the unique OOTP rules they originated made the game much better, and helped draw some very baseball-savvy outsiders from the FPS/APBA/DMB/SOM leagues. Probably no coincidence their Commish also has a great rep. At one point almost a year ago it seemed like about 90% of the OOTP leagues used a copy/pasted version of the XBL rules. They really raised the bar and since that time there have been many great new OOTP leagues that have followed them.

I was really looking forward to lurking around the XBL, then I just saw the main page where they were on hiatus. I was disappointed but I like the ATHL. The Commissioner of the League has a great setup going on.

Backintheday,
You, like many others, have asked that same question. In my opinion, there isn't any league out there far above all the rest. It really depends on what you're looking for - in terms of features. Some leagues simulate their games quickly, while some leagues like to have each season last longer. It's just a matter of preference and taste. There are some GREAT leagues out there currently. With the impending release of OOTPv4, you can bet your bottom dollar that more will surface. Here are, IMHO, some of the better leagues that I've come across over the past few years: All Time Hardball League (ATHL) Computer Baseball League (CBL) Crash Davis Baseball League (CDBL) eBaseball Association (eBA) Front Office Baseball League (FOBL) Glory Days Baseball League (GDBL) Hickory Baseball League (HBL) Home Town Baseball League (HTB) Magor League Baseball League (MBL) Suicide Squeeze Baseball League (SSBL) TBShaff's Baseball Association (TBSBA) These are not the ONLY great OOTP leagues out there. I'm positive there are many great leagues I've missed, but these are the leagues I check out on a daily basis do to the incredible work the commissioner and owners from each league put in. I'd recommend any of the aforementioned leagues, if you're interested in joining an OOTP league. If you're even looking for MORE leagues, check out Mark Cooley's OOTPLinks. You can find the link here: OOTPLinks.com Click on the "leagues" section to browser through the choices. I believe that, if you want to join a great league, you'll easily find one. Good Luck! ---------- Killebrew (Buddy Grant), I truly appreciate the kind words. I would definitely agree the owners of the XBL have made the league what it currently is today. Despite being on hiatus, I'm confident we'll be back in due time. There's no sense in throwing away so much work by myself and our owners, simply because of some personal problems. Thanks, again. ---------- LivnLegend, The hiatus for the XBL is do to some personal problems that have risen over the past few months for myself. While I would've loved to continue the league, the stress and workload that comes with running a league like the XBL (and many other great ones), is too great to expect any one person to do. It's my fault that I didn't hand-off more commissioner duties to some of my assistants. The workload simply became too much to bear, especially with the developing personal problems I've mentioned. I felt, all-in-all, it was better to put the league on hiatus, then expect one of my owners to assume the stress/workload that comes with running a league. For the XBL, some unique features is what makes it great, and with a interim commissioner, we would've had to cutback. I didn't feel that was in the best interest of the league. ----------- Anyway, enough of my yapping. For any potential owners out there, I recommend any of the leagues I've talked about above. You'll surely find a great league that fits your style. [ February 10, 2002: Message edited by: YourTypicalJoe ]
|

If you're looking to check out Home Town Baseball, we have moved to www.baseballsim.com
Thanks, Joe, for the kind words about my two leagues! |

Thanks guys for all your wonderful input. I think I'll check some of these leagues out once v4 is released. The OOTP community is blessed to have such innovative and dedicated people running these leagues and providing choices to GM a wide spectrum of eras and situations.

One neat thing about FOBL (IMO) is that we don't have a waiting list and we don't post on message boards for new members.
There is a system in place whereby prospective owners (affectionately called "vultures") participate on our message board (the nexus of league activity) and contribute to policy discussions, rules formulation, write articles, and in a few cases act as assistant general managers for teams. What's nice about this is that folks who want to become involved in FOBL really become immersed in the league, so when a team does come open from time to time we can pick from a group of already active particiapnts. |

Most leagues have a difficult time finding 16 owners who will actively partcipate, let alone 36 quality owners plus several equally enthusiastic observers. Like Killer, I hate to pimp the leagues that I'm a member of, but I would like to praise the commishes because they won't do it themselves . You won't find many commishes more dedicated than Mark Eschen of the PSBL or IatricSB of the Boys of Summer. Check out the individual player pages that Iatric created and try not to be impressed.[ February 11, 2002: Message edited by: Hammer755 ]
|

Be interesting to see what all people consider to be the best leagues as of right now.

USBA, CDL, Boys of Summer, and So49 come to mind immediately. I didn't name any of the leagues I am in, someone not in them can judge them.

Lonnie Moody was called away by military duty. I took a couple year break from being IN leagues, let alone assisting or running any. Derek Sweger and Kris Schlitter are still around somewhere.. Dave Dawson, who took the helm for awhile I believe, is still it out with me in SOOSimBL now. =D A league that's really coming along nicely, after what I'd call a rough start - and honestly I expect that league to run for quite awhile. Maybe we'll see it in a list like this a year from now. I think that about takes care of the former Suicide Squeeze staff -- and Stars & Stripes (which is also a great league, from what I hear) owns the ssbl.net domain now. So at least the link still goes somewhere! Although I know we switched to suicide-squeeze.net around the time this list was originally posted. |

It's an interesting coincidence that Killebrew bumped this thread today. I've just recieved an order today for a site called "backintheday", the same as this threadstarter's handle. Yet this thread was started in 2002!

Suicide Squeeze Coming Back
Suicide Squeeze will be coming back, probably in early January 2006... The domain was re-registered last night and website work will start within the next week or so. The site will be www.suicide-squeeze.net This was actually done before seeing the league mentioned in this forum which came as quite a surprise.
I ran the Suicide Squeeze league for several seasons before winning a trip to Iraq for a year. Soon after I first got back, I attempted to start a fictional league which I had simmed for over 100 seasons while deployed, but I soon found out that I truly wasn't ready to venture into the commissioners role at that time and give the league and owners the attention it would need. Settling back into family life with a wife and two kids was more of an adjustment than I thought it would be, but things are fine now and I'm looking forward to bringing the league back. I'm currently in one other league and while it's a great league, it just not the same experience or level of activity for me as running Suicide Squeeze was. Thanks mentioning the league in this post. Over the next couple of weeks I intend to try and relocate our former members to see what their interest level in returning is and we'll go from there.
