Trade Opinion

If you had a young superstar in a historical league how much would it take for you to trade him?

Specifically I'm talking about greats like Mantle and Mays.

We are allowed to trade draft picks so I have offered my 2 first rounders in the next draft plus a playable but crappy OFer for one of these studs.

I haven't heard back from anyone but was wondering if I'm out of my mind for even making the offer.

I wouldn't give up a player of that caliber for draft picks.

Whether I'd trade for him, though, is a different story. If I was a bottom-tier team and my draft picks were going to be good, then I wouldn't trade for him.

On the other hand, if I owned a team that was going to pick near last in the draft, then I would definitely trade that pick (or picks) for a young superstar. Better to go with what you know than count on the luck o' the draft.

trading for draft picks can be risky. It depends on how far away the team with the superstar you want is from contending.
I rarely trade away a superstar, no matter what someone offers me and not for draft picks unless I am way out from contending and the star is older and/or soon to be a free agent.

***WARNING! OFF-TOPIC REPLY***

Sorry to be off-topic, but I just can't help myself -- Wilt, that is, by far, the greatest signature in the history of the Internet. I mean, penguins, totally.

We now return you to your regularly scheduled inane drivel. (no offense, of course)

I run an Historical League that is currently in the 1986 season. The biggest start that has been traded in the league is Roger Clemens who was traded for a 1st Round Pick, 2nd Round Pick, $4,000,000 Cash, a 5 star major league SP, and a 3 star prospect RP.

Although Clemens is a superstar and is only 23 in this league, people thought that the team trading for him was crazy to give up so much. As it turns out, the team that got Clemens is currently in 1st place by 6 games and the team that traded Clemens is in dead last with the 3rd worst record in the league.

Bottom line...there is no right answer when it comes to trades involving absolute superstars. I think whether or not a move like that is going to work out has more to do with who else is on your team and what other types of trades you are making to support the loss of a superstar or to help that newly acquired superstar win. However, I would rather have a guy like Clemens, Mantle, Mays, etc then not have them!

Thanks for your responces guys. I was monstly concerned about offending my fellow owners. I'm not sure if I'll get the superstar or not, I just don't want it to look like I'm trying to steal him.

Never really made a deal THIS big. Thanks again!

Thumbs up

Well, you're probably not going to offend anyone...unless you're playing with a gang and didn't respect their "street cred." I'd say the most you stand to do is look like a moron; but hey, there's risk in everything, right? Carpe diem, moron!
