KBO Asian Quota Player Allocation: AI Should Flexibly Consider Starters, Relievers, and Hitters
Starting in 2026, the KBO League introduced an "Asian quota." Teams can now sign three players without nationality restrictions and one additional player with Asian nationality. As of today, foreign players without nationality restrictions have been signed as 2 pitchers and 1 hitter, while the Asian nationality player has been signed as a pitcher, divided between starters and relievers.
It would be ideal if the Asian quota feature were implemented immediately, but realistically, expectations are not high. However, rather than having foreign pitchers automatically assigned as starters 100% of the time, the AI should consider player ratings and team depth to determine assignments:
[Confirmed] 2 starting pitchers + 1 hitter
[Flexible] Asian quota player: could be a starter, a reliever, or a hitter (meaning that an Asian quota pitcher does not have to be a starter).
If all foreign players—including the Asian quota player—were automatically assigned as starters, it could create issues with player development and overall team management.
