ORIOLES HURLERS TOP NAMES IN ANOTHER WEAK HOF CLASS
Baltimore pitchers Milt Pappas and Steve Barber are the two big names in a very weak list of first time eligible players for the HOB Hall of Fame. Former Detroit and Texas slugger George Thomas is likely the only other candidate who will draw much interest from the voters but it is quite possible no one will be elected into the Hall this time around. The veterans committee has successfully lobied to have Gaby Hartnett added to the ballot. His numbers compare quite favourably to catchers from his era that are in the Hall. Another catcher, ex-Brave Joe Torre may also get some interest from the voters. Here are all the first time eligible candidates. Their bios and stats are listed below: George Thomas Outfielder Milt Pappas Pitcher Steve Barber Pitcher Mickey Lolich Pitcher Joe Torre Catcher Rico Petrocelli shortstop Jim Longborg Pitcher Bill Sorrell Third base Veterans Committe Gabby Hartnett Catcher Here are the repeat candidates along with the percentage of the vote they received last year. Their info can be found here : http://www.ootpbb.com/board/ubb/ultimatebb.php?ubb=get_topic&f=2&t=000057
Thanks in advance for your votes. Here is a look at each of the first time eligible candidates: George Thomas 5 time allstar never won a major award or batting title but did play consistantly for 16 years. Traded by Detroit to Texas in 1973 for Toby Harrah and Vic Harris. He never played in a postseason game.
Milt Pappas Led the American League in wins with 20 in 1969 but likely finished second to teammate Jack Fisher in Welch Award voting. Played in 7 World Series with Baltimore, winning 4 rings. Pitched a 4 hit shutout over LA in 1960 series. In 1969 he pitched 8 1/3 innings to help Baltimore beat Boston 7-3 in a playoff game to decide the AL East Division title. He was 2-2 in World Series play in his career.
Steve Barber Won the 1975 Welch Award as the American League's top pitcher. Like Pappas, Barber played on 7 Pennant winning and 4 World Champion Orioles teams. His career postseason record was 5-9. He started the 1975 allstar game.
Mickey Lolich American League rookie of the year in 1963, Lolich never pitched in a postseason game. He was the ace of some bad Tiger teams in the late-sixties and early-70's. Started the 1968 allstar game but was tagged with the loss.
Joe Torre 7 time all star catcher for the Braves. Never played a postseason game.
Rico Petrocelli Strong defensive shortstop for the Red Sox, Dodgers and Indians. Won a World Series ring with Boston in 1971 but batted just .130 in the postseason that year.
Jim Longborg Bothered by injuries for much of his career but won 20 games in 1971 and helped the Red Sox win the World Series.
Bill Sorrell Sorrell finished second to Rod Carew in the American League batting race in 1973. Batted .289 in the 1976 postseason as his Yankees lost to the Mets.
Gabby Hartnett The 8 time allstar catcher has career stats that rival HOB Hall of Famers Yogi Berra, Walt Lerian and Rudy York but Hartnett never got the call to join the game's elite. His best season was 1928 and he helped lead the Cubs to a World Series title that year. He retired following the 1939 season at the age of 38. Maybe a veterans committee is needed for the HOB Hall of Fame. Below Hartnett's season by season stats are a comparison of similiar era catchers that made it to the HOB Hall of Fame. NOTE: The veteran's committee did successfully loby to have Hartnett included on the 1984 ballot.

In a pretty weak class, I can only find one that I believe is worthy of induction, and it's not his first time on the ballot. This time after several seasons, 2900 hits and over 400 homers might just do the trick for him.
