FHM 12 Crashing on Multiple Saves

I have been unable to have a save work properly for more than a couple days before it starts to crash when I load it. Usually after that point, the game resets all my settings (changes the window size, disables facegen) and I can no longer continue the game from the home screen. So then when I try to load my save, I get a long pause on import players, and then it finally crashes on 64% on finished loading. This has happened across multiple saves among other issues, such as the game crashing when I try to sim the first game and getting an invalid database version message when I try to load a game.

I have tried just about everything I could think to resolve these issues and while they work temporarily, after a while the game eventually resets all the settings and then begins crashing again. I have tried reinstalling the game a number of times, resetting Windows permissions, running the game as administrator, replacing the continents file in my save with a new one, loading the backup files, removing the face pack I downloaded, among others. These all ended in either a temporary fix or no fix at all. Just looking for any help I can get because I really enjoy playing this and have been frustrated with it not working properly.

I uploaded my most recent save to the FTP Site with the folder name "The Waiting is Over Crash"

Are you using OneDrive? Steam/Fastspring? When you say the game crashes, you mean crash to desktop right? Not just hangs on 64% when loading?

I downloaded from steam, and yes it gets stuck on finished loading for a few seconds then crashes to desktop.

The most important question: do you use OneDrive?

I don’t believe so no, I’m pretty sure I turned all of the OneDrive settings off to try and fix this.

That would be something worth verifying.

The difficult thing is here, is to understand what's at play - we almost need to start from a fresh and know the first instance of an issue. You said you'd changed continents.dat, loaded backups etc etc all of this makes it hard to know what is likely to have changed what.

There's nothing as far as I'm aware (from a general troubleshooting standpoint) that would cause settings changes to revert at random. Crashing due to corrupt data is one thing but as Sebastian has alluded to before, that's nearly always an issue with Onedrive's read/write process causing havoc during the games save process otherwise it would be a more widespread issue affecting multiple users.

Have you set a custom data path/install location for the game or are you just using the default? Is this just a default game you're playing or did you edit lots of things/custom game?

I have been having constant crashes in my games all week also. I play a few weeks-months and then at random times it just crashes straight to the desktop. I dont know what OneDrive is, so I dont think it is on. I was fine for the first 8 or so seasons but the last 6 or so have been unsteady.

Wasn't your experience on Steam Deck? Or is this now an experience you're having on PC/Mac?

I switch between PC and Steam Deck. I don't crash on the Deck but while playing on PC I tend to crash quite often. But like I said earlier, it has only started this last few seasons/this week.

I tried the custom data path to get it out of OneDrive after I read this reply and started a new save to sim up to the same point as my previous one. A few hours later I reopened the game, and my settings were all reverted again and continue game is no longer an option, same issue as before. I tried to load the new save I just made after changing the data path, still crashed to desktop at 64% on finished loading. This makes me think there might be an issue with how the game installed as a whole, since this problem has gone over every save I have done to this point.

Ah right, well I suppose all of the same questions apply here, are you playing a vanilla/standard game or have you made any edits to anything? are you using Onedrive? Are the crashes replicable/do they always occur on the same instance? Is it a crash during loading or a crash during gameplay and it's a crash to desktop right?

If you've not already done so, could be worth uploading the affected save for Sebastian to inspect the data, though judging by the inconsistencies in the occurrences it doesn't sound like a simple case of corrupt data but I'd be happy to be wrong.

Where do you have the game installed? Have you tried things like verifying the integrity of the game files on Steam from the right click action menu?

What settings exactly are you referring to when you say they've reverted? Screen size and facegen being enabled?

Do you reach a particular point in the season/particular year when the crashing begins?

If you look in the save directory for the game, do any of the .dat files show as "0kb" for filesize? That would indicate corrupt data in a specific one potentially.

Just trying to establish if there is any consistency at all to the behaviour.

Just out of interest - where did you set the custom data path? I only ask because I'd had another user set it to the same directory that the game installs to on Steam and I figure it's worth mentioning that's not a good idea in general.

You mention that it could be an issue with how the game installed, you said you'd reinstalled a couple of times right? So that should take care of any issues with that - only other thing you could try is verifying the integrity of the game files via Steam, that basically checks for any issues with the install files and re-downloads them. That won't help a specific save file though.

Maybe Sebastian will get an idea from the save you uploaded, though if you wanted to upload this other one you've created to GoogleDrive I could try and load it/give it a run on my machine, that's not a priority though.

It basically resets any settings I changed in the main menu, so the window size, the skin, facegen settings, etc. It also greys out the continue game option forcing me to load a save, which is when I start experiencing the crashes. It doesn't happen at any specific point in the save, it's always after I shut down my computer and go back to it later. Sometimes I'm able to play in two or three different sessions over a couple days span, but usually no more than that before these issues come back. I just checked and none of the dat. files have 0kb as the file size.

For the custom data path, I just made a new folder called FHM 12 in (This PC > Windows-SSD (C). I also verified the files integrity on Steam and there didn't seem to be any issues there.

I'll be honest, I'm running out of ideas with this one - very strange. If you want, an extra level of troubleshooting would be to turn on the debugging log (a text file which can help debug issues, it will appear every time you close the game once you've enabled it).

This is done via the 'settings' from the main menu, then 'troubleshoot' and a check box to enable the debug log is there, probably worth giving that a try and seeing if that log shows anything - you can share the contents of the file or upload the file itself for Sebastian to look at.

The global settings (e.g. skin or FaceGen settings) are stored in a file located in:

C:\User"your username"\AppData\Roaming\Out of the Park Developments\Franchise Hockey Manager 12\config\settings.dat

Might be a good idea to check if you have that file.

A reset of the settings only happens when the file is deleted, then the game will create a new one with the default settings.

There might also be a problem with your Read/Write permissions (so you change something but it does not get saved because you have no rights to do so).

Ok I just loaded the game and let it crash to get that debug file, so I'll attach a google drive link to that.

https://drive.google.com/file/d/1erJ...ew?usp=sharing

I also found a bunch of crash dump files (.dmp), not sure if those would show any details.

Can't hurt to share the .dmp files too - where were they created btw?

Can you please check if you have the following folders and file:

C:/Program Files (x86)/Steam/steamapps/common/Franchise Hockey Manager 12/data/skins/dark/dark.qss

According to the trace file it does not find it (which is strange).

I am playing a standard game but in with edits. I have expanded the league to 40 teams, expanded the cap by 5 mil most season's to currently 150mil, edited draft classes/player.

I don't know what OneDrive is so I don't think so.

Crashes happen whenever, it could be while advancing to the next day or it could be while nothing is happening, it also happens when switching through screens. I can not replicate them so no they don't happen while doing the same action.

Yes it crashes straight to desktop everytime.

I don't know how to upload the save or where to do it either.

I have not tried to verify the file and it is installed exactly where you said on Steam and the default place in the user file on PC.

One thing to keep in mind is, I move my save file from PC to Steam Deck and back every week. It has never once crashed on the Deck. But it does crash often on PC some days, while other days not at all. I find this very odd. I also have a fresh PC build just a few months ago and do very little on that PC outside of play on Steam, talk on Discord, update my player on the SHL and browse Facebook. So it's not like there should be anything going on outside of normal operations l.

Also I only sim games i never watch them just because my Deck dose not like it so when on PC I just dont.

Here are the instructions to upload a save:

Upload Instructions

If you upload the save I can try to break it here and look what the problem(s) are.
