how to best use league calc modifiers
I'm trying to use the league stat modifiers to make my 2026 results more in line with say 2010. So, I bring in the totals from year 2010. where i'm confused is how to best tweak. I was altering the totals and then hitting 'auto calc modifers' but i'm getting weird results. for example, small changes to triples are impacting other lines in odd ways. my questions are:
1. which number is impacting the engine? is it the leage total, or the modifier? 2. How do I best tweak the modifiers, if I don't want to auto-calc (or do I just enter the totals I want, hit auto calc and trust it? 3. do i want to lock league total stats? what will this do to my league mid year? 4. The defensive modifiers......what do they do? I'm guessing if errors are move than 1.0, i will get more errors. but what about range? is a number over 1 improving range? |

1. Both. The League Totals are the "base" and the modifiers adjust things from that base.
2. Likely a lot of testing. Auto-Calc essentially runs multiple tests for you and adjusts/re-adjusts the modifiers based on its' results. However, one caveat on that is that it (I believe) uses only the current lineups/depth charts as they are (i.e. it doesn't factor in injuries, player increases/decreases, etc). However, running the tests yourself is obviously much more time consuming and every test will have different factors. 3. This setting is for historical progression. It will not affect a league that is simulating into the "future" or anything during your current season. It tells the game not to pull in the next years' historical League Stats as you move from year-to-year. 4. Those are my same assumptions, but I've not messed with those modifiers much. |

My recommendation would probably be to run Auto-Calc, but then also follow that up with your own test (backing up your save first).
*Always make sure to run Auto-Calc on Opening Day after the rosters have been determined so that it isn't using off-season/spring training depth chart for its' simulations. |

One slightly different thing to consider, and to be honest I waffle and go back and forth on whether or not I use auto-calc randomly because of this...when you auto-calc and you are forcing the league to remain static. So regardless of draft classes and international FAs and what not, you want the league totals to remain pretty much the same over time. Yes you'll still get outliers in terms of players having monster seasons here and there...but overall your league will look the same year in and year out. I sometimes don't auto-calc for a number of years because I want to see if the league tilts towards a pitchers league or a hitters league naturally and organically. Sometimes it does, sometimes it doesn't. But just tossing it out there as a reason why you may not want to auto-calc on opening day every year.

Yes, if playing out a fictional game, I like to Auto-Calc the initial season to set the "base" and let things evolve from there (i.e. do not run auto-calc for subsequent seasons). Often, I will even simulate 20 years and delete them after that initial auto-calc so that at the very beginning I have naturally deviated from the exact base. That probably isn't all that necessary considering auto-calc itself is going to allow for some variance (since it isn't controlling outputs but simply setting a base to start from) but it helps alert me to any potential issues with my setup if things go awry in those 20 years.

Select the 2010 season for the league totals before the season begins and the modifiers will calculate on opening day. The modifiers will take into account all of the settings for your league including including injury settings and development and aging settings. Everything is used because that is what the game uses to determine the modifiers.
Do not force the game to generate modifiers by hitting the button. You only need to let it do what it does on opening day. No need to mess with the defensive modifiers as they should also venerate according to 2010. |
