The game will not let you offer an extension to a player in the season before an opt out (or option years I think). If a player has just option years after the current season or has an opt out after the season, then it should be possible to negotiate an extension with that player. It happens all the time in baseball. The Red Sox had the option to negotiate an extension with Alex Bregman before he opted out this year as an example.

I mean, technically you should be able to offer an extension at any time, regardless of years left, but I definitely agree with this one
