Windows cannot access the file for one of the following reasons: there is a problem with the network connection, the disk that the file is stored on, or the storage drivers installed on this computer; or the disk is missing. Windows closed the program ootp26.exe because of this error.

Program: ootp26.exe
File:

The error value is listed in the Additional Data section.
User Action
1. Open the file again. This situation might be a temporary problem that corrects itself when the program runs again.
2. If the file still cannot be accessed and
- It is on the network, your network administrator should verify that there is not a problem with the network and that the server can be contacted.
- It is on a removable disk, for example, a floppy disk or CD-ROM, verify that the disk is fully inserted into the computer.
3. Check and repair the file system by running CHKDSK. To run CHKDSK, click Start, click Run, type CMD, and then click OK. At the command prompt, type CHKDSK /F, and then press ENTER.
4. If the problem persists, restore the file from a backup copy.
5. Determine whether other files on the same disk can be opened. If not, the disk might be damaged. If it is a hard disk, contact your administrator or computer hardware vendor for further assistance.

Additional Data
Error value: 0x0
Disk type: 0x0

It's just so strange to me that I can play every other game on ultra settings but crash when just looking at players names and adjusting rosters, etc. This is most recent one, took place when loading a save which is a bit different but still just a crash to desktop.

In both OOTP 25 and 26:

Game runs normally for 1–3 hours (creating new leagues, simming, general use).

Then it randomly crashes to desktop.

Windows Application log always shows:

Faulting application name: ootp26.exe, version: 26.8.81.0
Faulting module name: ootp26.exe, version: 26.8.81.0
Exception code: 0xc000001d (EXCEPTION_ILLEGAL_INSTRUCTION)
Fault offset: 0x000000000238d27f
Faulting module path: C:\OOTP 26\ootp26.exe

I also get the generic “Windows cannot access the file… Windows closed the program ootp26.exe because of this error” text, but there are no disk/path errors in the OOTP trace and everything else on the drive is fine.

The fault offset in ootp26.exe is consistent across multiple crashes.

Other games (including much heavier 3D titles) are completely stable on this system.

Install / Config Details

OOTP 26 is installed to a simple local path:
C:\OOTP 26\ootp26.exe

No OneDrive, network, or special folders involved for the game EXE.

User data and saves are local (no cloud sync).

In the trace, OOTP reports my CPU as:

“Unknown CPU type, 32 logical CPUs, ~3187 MHz”

which I assume just means the 14900KS isn’t in their internal name table.

3D and FaceGen are disabled via app.cfg and the trace confirms:

disable_3d = 1

disable_facegen = 1

Windows / Profile / File System Stuff I’ve Already Tried

Fresh Windows User Profile

Created a new local admin user.

Confirmed Desktop/taskbar and shell are normal there.

Installed OOTP 26 fresh under this new profile.

Crashes still occur with the same 0xC000001D / same fault offset after a while.

Fully Local Install & Data

Moved OOTP off any OneDrive-touched paths.

Game installed at C:\OOTP 26, data under local user directory / local folders.

No junctions, no network shares, no removable drives.

Reinstall / Clean Config

Uninstalled OOTP, deleted leftover folders under:

C:\OOTP 26\

%APPDATA%\Out of the Park Developments\OOTP Baseball 26\

Reinstalled fresh, let the game recreate default configs.

Only change afterwards: disable 3D and FaceGen in app.cfg.

System File / Disk Health

sfc /scannow → OK.

chkdsk /scan on the SSD → OK.

Other applications/games show no instability.

Intel CPU & Memory Diagnostics

Intel Processor Diagnostic Tool: all tests pass:

MMX/SSE/SSE2–SSE4.2, AVX, AVX2, FMA3, AES, PCLMULQDQ

Memory controller stress / DGEMM AVX2

No errors, no hints of marginal hardware.

No Overclocking

BIOS set to defaults.

No XMP/EXPO/DOCP.

No “AI overclock”, PBO, or other auto-OC.

No third-party overclock/undervolt tools running.

Overlays / Injectors

Disabled NVIDIA/GeForce overlay, Game Bar, Discord overlay, etc. while testing.

Crashes still occur.

Behavior in the Trace

From the latest ootp_trace_2025-11-03_19-17-56.txt:

Game starts normally, loads:

world_default.xml

names, injuries, parks, league structures, etc.

3D/FaceGen clearly disabled, but engine still loads some animation data (expected).

No file permission errors, no failed reads of core data.

It logs normal activity (including HTTP/online calls when applicable) and then simply stops; Windows reports the 0xC000001D crash in ootp26.exe at offset 0x000000000238D27F.

I’ve seen the same pattern whether I’m:

Creating a brand-new fictional league, or

Playing an existing league, online or offline.

Sometimes it crashes while creating a league, sometimes after a couple of hours of simming/playing.

What I’m Looking For

At this point:

Hardware is stress-tested and passes (including AVX2/FMA).

No OC/XMP.

Clean local install, clean profile, normal config (3D/FaceGen off).

Only OOTP 25 and 26 are throwing 0xC000001D (illegal instruction) on this machine.

The crash offset in ootp26.exe is consistent across logs.

I’m hoping the devs can:

Look at the code around that fault offset in the 26.8.81 Windows 64-bit build and see if there’s a CPU feature / instruction path that might misbehave on 14th-gen Intel + this Win11 build.

Possibly provide a debug build or logging option I can run to help narrow down exactly what subsystem is executing when it hits the illegal instruction.

I’m happy to:

Test a beta build,

Capture additional traces,

Or run with specific command-line flags if that helps.

Thanks for any help—happy to provide the latest trace files and full Windows event log entries if needed.

One thing I want to add: Something that worked for me, at least last night, Setting affinity to 0-7 cores in task manager -> details and using 16 helper threads in game. Maybe there is something the game is asking the processor to do that is unexpected and causing the crash. But it was only like 3-4 hours, so need a larger sample.

7 hour session last night with no crashes after setting CPU affinity to 0-7 and threads to 16. Something with the 14900ks does not like the game it seems. Again, I run anything at max settings and have no issues, have hardware tested everything imaginable. Has to be a compatibility thing? Dunno.

Crashes on 0-15 affinity, 16 threads. No crashes on 0-7. Again, this is the only game that I have played that does this.
