How do you determine the "best team"?
I am working on a project that I hope to share soon, but wanted people's opinions on what you consider the "best team" under these conditions.
I have groups of teams playing out seasons in different years....1910, 1971, etc. I want the best teams to move on based on the results I get. My original thinking was to take the team that won the most World Series over the seasons I played. If it was a tie, then the tie breaker would be the total number of World Series they went to. However, I just had a scenario where one team made it to 6 out of 8 but only won 1 championship. Another team went to 4 of 8 but won 2, and I was having them move on. That got me wondering if I am doing things backwards. Should I consider the team that made it to the most World Series the best and have the tie breaker be wins?
What if one team made it to all 8 and won 1 or even none, while another team made it to just 2 but won them both? It wouldn't seem right to move on the team that just went to 2 World Series over one that went to 8. In other cases you could have a team go to 4 and win all 4 while another team went to 5 and lost them all....that wouldn't seem right to move them on.
Either way there are extremes that could happen where it would seem like the "wrong" team made it through. Any thoughts you have are welcome....thanks!
