See if you agree: The most impactful sports TV play-by-play voices of the 21st century
From The Athletic:
Quote:
1. He's talking about the 21st Century (so far). The notables of the last century are therefore omitted. 2. He's talking about "impactful", not necessarily good, very good, or great. 3. He's not talking about sports talk show hosts, thank God, such as you-know-who and you-know-who over at ESPN. Do you agree with his assessment? Has he overlooked or included anybody wrongly, in your opinion? EDIT: In the article, the author mentions a reader poll; here is the link: https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/655...-century-poll/. Obviously, I cannot reproduce that here and only subscribers will be able to access it.

He listed everybody. What's to disagree with?

There are plenty to disqualify here…
Marv. His best work was in the previous century and he spent over 3 years out of a job because of his sex scandal. I love him, but this is the wrong period. Enberg. Same thing; he lost his #1 NFL seat when NBC lost the package in 1997, and was only #4 at CBS. (1 was Nantz/Simms, 2 was Eagle/Fouts, 3 was Gumbel/Dierdorf, 4 was Enberg/Cross. They were barely ahead of Harlan and Gannon.). He did some nice baseball work, but that was local in San Diego. Well-remembered but hardly impactful. Byington. She was a First, but if it weren't her, somebody else would have been. There's a difference between being Jackie Robinson and being Chuck Cooper. Byington is a Chuck Cooper. Screaming Gus Johnson. You're ****ing kidding, right? An automatic channel-changer. Ew. Joe Schmuck. Has anybody ever thought he was "great" at anything? No. The only reason he's not Thom Brennaman is because Joe was more nationally-known than Marty. Sean McDonough. I deeply loathe him, but that's a longer story. ("One word can change history". That story also makes me think he's a racist, too.). As. a broadcaster, he's a weasel-faced mediocrity. F him long, f him hard and drop him in a ditch when you're done. Michael Cole. Sucks. Botches all over the place and has become a clown, too. Joe Tessitore. A monotone mediocrity. Like Joel Myers, has perfected a mellifluous "perfect" voice, but can't tell a story. (Myers is better than he is.) When he does try to show excitement, he's a joke. ("It's a classic, Wade! A CLASSIC!"). Mauro Rannallo wasn't great crossing over from the two rings (boxing and wrestling), but he was better than Sore Testicles at both. Musberger. Was once the star at CBS, but that ended before Bill Clinton reached the White House. Shulman. Did he have a couple of years as the best baseball pbp guy at ESPn? Yes. Is that worth celebrating? No. Miller was better before him, Ravech has been better since. Buh-bye. Tirico. He only truly shines as a host, which would be an interesting list…but it's not this list. All JMO, naturally. |

Kevin Harlan is the best in the business. Wish he did less basketball and more of everything else.
Edit: Also got to add Brian Anderson just for being great. I might be a a bit biased but his baseball stuff is tops.

Yes, he did great work at the French Open this year, as well stellar NBA work, for starters.
Does he still to local Brewers 'casts or have you lost him to the networks? |

As a Royals fan, I accepted the Giants beating us in the 2014 World Series, but....I got a little sick of Joe Buck saying "Madison Bumgarner" every 3.5 seconds.

I'd say he does about 50% of Brewers games now.

I jokingly mentioned Gary Cohen earlier but apparently he really is a great announcer, revered by the Mets fans here along with Keith Hernandez and Ron Darling. But outside of New York, he and they are obscure. But remember, I stipulated in the opening post that the author was talking about impact, not greatness, and implied in this is, naturally, a focus on the broadest of broadcasting. That said, however, I must admit that many of these names are unfamiliar to me. I guess I don't watch enough sports or pay enough attention to who is bloviating about them.

That's why I said he was great, not impactful. I did read the entire original post.

Yes, I would be interested in hearing more about local greatness. I was surprised and pleased that Mike Breen made the list. He is the lead announcer for New York Knicks games on the MSG Network, but I overlooked the fact that he has also been the lead announcer for NBA games on ABC and ESPN since 2006, including the NBA Finals. He is both great and noteworthy!

I disagree, Joe Buck only got his job because of his dad, and he is one of the worst play by play announcers in history.

Eh, I see a lot of names that do not care for on broadcasts and folks that I have never heard of. Way too long for a "best" list.
