The Phoenix Keystones wrapped up a disappointing 2006 United Baseball League season with a 71-91 record, finishing tied for last (5th place) in the Western Division, 23 games behind the division-winning Los Angeles Blue Sox. Here's a breakdown of key takeaways from their season:
Highlights Bob McCoy: The clear offensive star, batting .316 with 32 HR and 107 RBI, leading the team in both categories and earning Freedom Batter of the Month honors. Bill Houston: Quietly excellent, slashing .319/.365/.475 with 37 SB, giving the team a strong presence at the top of the order. Denny Buchanan: Solid behind the plate with a .290 average and .408 OBP, plus a team-best 3.7 WAR. Carlos Rodríguez: Provided legit power from 2B with 26 HR and 101 RBI. Team Speed: 2nd in Freedom with 171 stolen bases, showing strong baserunning. ❄️ Lowlights Pitching Collapse: Team ERA: 5.37 (13th in Freedom) Starters’ ERA: 5.51 (14th) – worst in the league. Opponents’ AVG: .297 (last) and BABIP of .334, suggesting poor defense or bad luck (or both). Bruce Nethery & Jack Smith: Brutal recent stretches — Nethery (10.20 ERA, last 14 games), Smith (12.51 ERA, last 3 games). Félix Perea & Bartolo González: Ice-cold late in the year; Perea at .136 over his last 5, González at .158 over 15. Seasonal Trends Stronger early/midseason (15-13 May, 15-12 July) Complete collapse late (August: 8-19, September: 9-19) Last 10 games: 2-8 — a limping finish. ⚾ Team Profile Strengths: Good contact hitting: .290 team average (3rd in Freedom) Plate discipline: 2nd in walks (524) Speed: 2nd in stolen bases (171) Weaknesses: Power: 15th in home runs (135) Pitching staff was a disaster, especially starters Defense questionable, judging by BABIP and opponent average Few standout fielders or aces to build around Financials & Personnel Payroll: $62.6M — middle of the pack, but not delivering results Transactions to Note: Acquired SP Arturo Correa and Bryan Wilson (both yet to debut) Let go of Hanna, added minor-league depth Signed SP Wilson for $4.8M — a bet on bounce-back pitching What’s Next? Offseason Priorities: Overhaul the starting rotation – top 3 starters had ERAs over 5.00. Evaluate bullpen roles – Nethery, Smith imploded. Solidify defense, especially if BABIP woes are due to poor fielding. Add right-handed power – heavy LHB lineup, little pop from RH bats. Replace or develop 3B – Perea struggled (.224 AVG, -0.4 WAR). The league is currently a bit over halfway full. Teams are being snatched up quickly. Starting on the ground floor is the way to go with OOTP. Why inherit someone else's team with all their mistakes. Start fresh here.

New York has just become available if anyone is interested.
We mimic MLB, we have fictional teams and fictional players, but the structure is very MLB'ish. Come join, we are 18 deep, would love to fill the league. Last edited by Phatman; 06-05-2025 at 09:33 PM. |
