New Century Baseball Association
CALL FOR TEAM MANAGERS—A BASE BALL UNDERTAKING OF GRAND DESIGN!
Esteemed Gentlemen, Lovers of Our National Pastime, The noble sport of Base Ball stands upon the precipice of its grandest era yet! With clubs gathering from far and wide, seeking to bring order to this fine game, a new endeavor is afoot—The New Century Base Ball Association. As we stand in the year 1871, the game is yet young, though its ways grow more formal with each passing season. There is talk of a lasting arrangement, a proper league where clubs might compete not merely in friendly contest but for true standing in the annals of history! The year 1901 shall mark the dawning of a modern era, where those of keen mind and steady hand shall take the reins of their beloved clubs and guide them forth into the new century. Yet, two such fine base ball clubs stand in need of a resolute steward: Detroit Tigers - Holder of the top SS in baseball, as well as #4 ranked SP. New York Highlanders – A club of great ambition, seeking a leader of vision. A Game in All Its Stages This Association doth endeavor to capture the entirety of base ball's history, with all its triumphs and tribulations. The rules and ways of play shall evolve as they did in truth, including: ✅ The Reserve Clause & Its Eventual Unshackling – A game long ruled by the owners, until change comes. ✅ The Color Barrier & Its Breaking – A grave injustice, at last rectified by heroes of the diamond. ✅ The Wars of Nations – Players shall be called away to serve, altering the course of their clubs. ✅ From the Dead Ball Age to the Mighty Sluggers – A time of cunning and swiftness, followed by a time of power. ✅ The Expansion of the Game – More clubs, more contests, more glory! ✅ The Great Debates – Shall pitchers bat? Shall clubs cross leagues in play? Time shall tell. ✅ The Modern Reckoning – Strength of arm and bat is ever changing, as the game bends to new wisdom. ⚾ SEEKING MEN OF VISION & CHARACTER! The post of Team Manager is not for the faint of heart. It requires keen foresight, a steady temperament, and an abiding love for base ball's past, present, and future. As we near the year 1901, the clubs shall pass from their caretakers to those who would lead them into the modern age. Should ye possess the mettle to steer one of these fine base ball clubs through the decades, make haste! Declare thy intent, and join us in shaping the very history of the sport we hold so dear! Apply forthwith, lest ye be left behind as the march of base ball presses ever onward! Last edited by saturn2187; 07-31-2025 at 04:16 PM. |

League has simulated its backstory from 1871. We stand at the verge of onboarding GMs in 1901.
The only vacancy is the New York Highlanders (later Yankees). They will have the largest Market in the new league. Any takers? https://atl-02.statsplus.net/ncba/ |

Esteemed Sir,
I write to tender my candidacy for the post of General Manager to a Nine of reputable habits and ambitious designs. Though my hand is humble and my purse not ostentatious, I have a turn for order, economy, and victory; qualities which, in conjunction, will season a club better than all the goose-grease nostrums in New England. I am, by nature, a steward of scarce resources. A bat should be purchased only when a bat is necessary, and a ball should be pursued until it begs forgiveness. I keep a ledger in a steady hand; the figures therein behave as soldiers on parade—no stragglers, no deserters. I understand the delicate traffic of engagement and remuneration, and can sign a promising fellow for less than his mother’s estimate, while keeping the lad cheerful enough to leg out a three-bagger on a damp afternoon. My conception of the game is “scientific,” by which I mean not timid but intelligent. A run saved is a run earned; a base stolen is a sermon against sloth; and a ball skillfully cut to the outfield’s vacant provinces is the sweetest species of arithmetic. Our pitchers shall deliver with probity (underhand, as Providence and the rule-book presently intend), our catchers shall be stout of chest and stouter of resolve, and our fielders shall comport themselves as gentlemen even while removing hits from the enemy’s hopes. The batsmen, for their part, will be made acquainted with patience, which is a rarer virtue than courage and twice as profitable. Discipline shall be firm but not cruel. Cards and ardent spirits will be kept at a Sabbath distance from our quarters on the eve of a match; feet will be shod; stockings, matched; and mustaches, if worn, groomed with a civic spirit. I have observed that a clean uniform steals two errors a week from the ledger and adds a certain moral terror to our aspect upon the green. Concerning the exchange of players: I hold that a young man with sound wind, a respectful bow to authority, and a hopeful eye is worth two veterans who are acquainted too intimately with their own opinions. Still, should some noted slugger or cunning twirler be had at an equitable figure, I am not the sort to let an opportunity pass by on tip-toe. I will traffic by telegraph when required and settle by handshake when permitted. If the Association should favor me with this responsibility, I pledge: honest books; punctual trains; a club that runs out its grounders, hits behind its runners, and tips its cap to both the paying public and the umpire (even when the latter is a man of strange persuasions). In short, I shall endeavor to make of your Nine a credit to your city, a vexation to your rivals, and a regular inconvenience to the scorers of opposing clubs. I remain, with sincere respect and a candid appetite for pennants, Your obedient servant, Rugshark |
