2D mode and dump and chase
As a Flyers fan from the 80s, I know well the phenomenon of the dump and chase method. Even then I hated it, but that's how my favorite team loved to play, and it is an attacking style in FHM11, so it should probably work.
Unfortunately, my experience is that dump and chase nearly never works in FHM11 2D mode. Here are my key takeaways:
1. The defense almost always reaches the puck first (99+ percent?)
2. The defense NEVER fails to clear the puck on a dump and chase
3. Dump and chase ALMOST never sees the puck wrap around the boards
No. 3 is probably the most important, and the most confounding. I have seen the puck very rarely wrap around the boards on a dump and chase, so the coding is clearly there. In those rare cases, I can't predict who will reach the puck first. As it should be.
But the majority of the time, the puck sticks to the boards, or worse, doesn't even appear to reach the boards. This all means that, visually anyway, dump and chase is absolutely ineffective and should never be used. Unfortunately, some players seem hardcoded to play dump and chase even if that is not the attack style I set.
I will add that passing in the offensive zone is often so haphazard as to seem random. A player in front of goal will all too frequently pass the puck to the wing or the point. I am willing to accept the reality that the game is simply not illustrating in 2D what is "truly happening" on the ice, i.e., I am seeing a center pass to the point when he is 5 feet from goal, but in reality, that is not where the coding thinks he is (so a pass to the point makes sense). That said, when watching 2D mode, this is excessively frustrating to watch.
In case the devs are not aware of these things, I share this post. Thanks for reading.
