Earned run is logged as unearned
It's been a while since I've seen this, but errors on pop fouls can falsely trigger an unearned run.
In the situation, with nobody on and 1 out... the first baseman drops a foul pop for an error, but then the batter is retired normally for the 2nd out -- which renders the error moot. The next guy hits a 2-out solo homer and the box score shows this run as unearned. |

To get an idea of how frequently this occurs, I did a search on the game logs for a season and this scenario occurred six times (over 1620 MLB games). So while it's relatively rare, it's going to consistently happen multiple times every season.
Basically, there were just over 50 "Error on foul ball" plays over the season. But once you filter those down to the ones where the batter subsequently makes an out and then a run scores with two outs, it was down to six. But RNG suggests it could easily be a bit higher. |
