Classic Teams QS Mod on Steam Workshop

I am posting a new Mod titled Classic MLB Teams by Era on the Steam Workshop.

You can also download the QS zip here and then move the files into the OOTP 25 quickstart folder: https://www.mediafire.com/file_premi...tarts.zip/file

This will contain 9 QS games each dedicated to a specific era. Each team in that era is represented by their best season.

From the OOTP 25 Main Menu, select New Game>New Quickstart Game and then select which of the eras you want.

The QS games are titled:

Classic MLB 1901-19

Classic MLB 1920-29

Classic MLB 1930-49

Classic MLB 1950-69

Classic MLB 1970-79

Classic MLB 1980-89

Classic MLB 1990-99

Classic MLB 2000-09

Classic MLB 2010-19

This QS mod is now up on the Steam Workshop. I actually submitted it when I created this thread, but it took until now for it to show up in the Workshop.

When you go to the Workshop select "see all items" and you will find Classic MLB Teams by Era. Subscribe to the mod, then open OOTP 25 and select Workshop Central from the Main menu. This will bring up your subscribed items. Download the item and then install it from within OOTP 25.

Note: the team logos and uniforms will all be fictional logos when you load these QS games. There is no way to bring the logos over through the QS and since OOTP adds the year of the team to the team name it does not match any logos or uniforms and graphics in the game files. You can load these manually though if you want.

Hey Garlon,

I would love to try this mod but it isn't showing in the Workshop.

It was up but then I updated the description and now it is under review again by Steam. It may take a while. Maybe Steam will post it again tomorrow.

Many thanks, Garlon. I'm sure you put a ton of time and effort into creating these quickstarts. Perhaps you could tell us more about your approach.

I decided to try the 1950s-60s quickstart. Simmed it with these results: 1954 CLE defeated 1966 BAL in 7 games. 1967 STL defeated 1960 PIT in 6 games. Then 1954 CLE swept 1967 STL for the championship. Mickey Mantle and Frank Robinson led the league in HRs with 42.

Interestingly enough, Frank Robinson won the MVP award in both leagues (1966 BAL and 1961 CIN).

For these QS games, we actually needed to find a workaround in order to get OOTP to give us the EOS (end of season) rosters. When you select a team to import, by default it just gives you the OD (opening day) rosters regardless of whether you select the historical.odb file or the EOS or the OD files. Basically, OOTP is just hard coded to give you the OD rosters from that file. What we did was to take a copy of the OOTP DB and rename the EOS roster file to OD rosters so that when selecting a team OOTP would then pull the EOS rosters for a given team.

This is all done by creating a fictional league and then switching to select historical teams to import when building the league. In terms of the imports after that there are no options, so I think what we get is 3yr double weighted with the default adjust/weaken values for batters and pitchers as well as 3yr fielding ratings and 3yr stamina for pitchers. The season I selected as the focus season for each league is the rounded average of the seasons of the teams.

In total there are 206 teams across the 9 QS files. Originally, the plan was to do a QS for each decade, but once you get to the decades before the divisional era you will end up with some teams that are just not that competitive, so I grouped 1950s and 1960s together and even added in entries for teams that relocated so you get both 1955 Brooklyn Dodgers and 1965 Los Angeles Dodgers and the same for Braves (1957 and 1969) and Giants (1954 and 1962) too. The 1930s and 1940s are also grouped together for the same purpose and because you have WWII seasons in there as well. The 1920s are their own league because the offensive level was just so much different in those seasons. Then finally we have 1901-1919 which is the early and late Deadball era combined.

By grouping the teams like this there is less of a concern about this really being cross-era play because the teams across the decade or era are playing under very similar offensive and pitching levels and playing against players of that same era too.

There were some teams that did not have a dominant season in a given decade or may have had a couple from which to choose, so LansdowneSt and I needed to dig deeper on those to make the final selections.

Keep in mind when playing these that there is an abundance of talent in the league, so you get the same sort of compression of stats like you get when playing Perfect Team because OOTP is still going to generate 1985 league ratios with the modifiers for example. I have only tested these a bit, but I think considering the number of options you have when setting up the game that you can get different results each time you play. There are of course some teams that are just stronger though.

These games load of Jan 1st, so if you want to switch the 1980s from 1985 to 1987 or any other season you can still do that and you can toggle on or off any other options you want. That kind of thing can change which teams perform better too. A team with a lot of power hitters may not perform as well playing in 1988 vs playing in 1987 for example.

I've seen what you mean about getting different results. Kind of wish the import was 1-yr recalc. But 3-yr no doubt makes the league even more competitive. Nice work overall. I did notice that the teams sign international and other free agents during the season. Not that it matters, though.

BTW, I did catch part of Beatles' broadcast last night. Good to see you chiming in with some instruction and guidance in using the quickstarts. I hope viewers were paying attention.

Sounds interesting, and your work always reflects your interest, insight, and industry. Is there a chance of a FastSpring version? Either way, congratulations on seeing a project through to the end.

We can try get a download link up for those who do not use the Steam Workshop like we did with the InteGREATed mod.

I will reach out to LansdowneSt about hosting this for the community.

Any effort along those lines would certainly be appreciated, but by no means expected—I would not want anyone to feel imposed upon. If it can be done according to your inclination and convenience, great. Again, either way, I hope you find that the finished product rewards your efforts—though, to be honest, I find that on projects such as these at least half of the fun is in the process of creation itself.

Also, to be clear: while I have the FastSpring version of OOTP, I do have a Steam account. Is it possible to download the file from the workshop and just move the downloaded file into my OOTP folder like any QS that I might download here? If so, I wouldn’t want you or anyone else to unnecessarily devote time and effort on my behalf. Thanks again.

I can put it up. Let's connect this evening. I'm around - we're hosting, not traveling, for Thanksgiving.

I heard some of last night's Beatles' interview with Garlon and Lans. Loved the baseball stories! Here's the YouTube link: https://www.youtube.com/live/aXBxrNW...Oluk6NSPi4mLE8 The interview begins about 1 hour and 45 minutes into the recording.
