All Time Great Players ... coming soon.
Just thought I'd post a note to let everyone know I'm in the process of sifting through the Lahman's database and the baseball encyclopedia to create a master file of all significant palyers from 1900 to 2003. I'm almost done with the 1960's.
There will be all the best players (and many duplicates) to choose from. It will therefore be possible to set up and create historical leagues from all the best players over any of the modern decades. Drop me a note if you'd be interested in obtaining a copy of my files. Lastly, "thanks" to the people at OOTP for putting together this wonderfully fancinating experience. Keep up the good work as I see there is still a ways to go especially in making "on-line" games more interactive and easier to keep play and keep track of. This is my contribution toward that goal. Thanks for your interest. I'm working to finish the 1960's. Are you interested in viewing my files so far? Give me the directions for posting the file - its about 75-90 MB zipped and nearly 500 MB unzipped and growing! Other than Lehman's its an awesome file of players. With any luck I'll be done with the 60's by 9pm this evening. Then its onwards 70's, 80's, 90's, & 2000's - about 50-60 more hours of work. But, I have not left out many significant players. When I'm done, I'll polish it off with some 19th Century Greats!
My email is: Redfoxtrot@aol.com Regards Spanky |

I would definitely be interested in something like tihs. I was thinking of doing something similar, except just mainly using hall of famers. Thanks for your work.

Spankys All Time Greats (SATG's)
Good news! The file size has been reduced greatly since I deleted all the box scores and news stories from the league date files. However, since I'm just beginning the 1970's, I expect it to grow quite a bit. So far, everythink is managable but then again I have 600MB Ram running too. It would be nice were there a utility to split off certain players or teams. I go thru this everytime I find a baseball game I like. Once its done its done and the updates are minimal. However, it makes for years of playing enjoyment. Let me know if you have any ideas.

I sent you an email with upload info. If you'd like to upload what you have, I'll take a look to see if there is any way to decrease the file size for final release. Thanks again for your hard work!

Adventure Ran
Thanks for writing. I did not receive your email instructions.
Could you send them again? I'm just starting into the 1970's and so am not ready to post an official copy. Of course, I know there are many who may not care and want to use what I have done so far. I suppose that's ok. I have cut the file size down dramatically as I stopped playing games and deleted the box scores and news files. May I ask for a favor in return? Commish Joe is going to help me set up a website for my league. In the meantime, I have alot of questions about some of the other MOD programs listed on your site. Such as Cato's utility. What is that used for? On-line or off-line games? And, would you be so kind as to help me get pointed in the right direction? That is help me make the best use of the right MODS and help me get my on-line league together? My player data file is truely a work of love and reflects a very rich and well populated presentation of baseball "all time great," and, in some respect, not so great supporting players. For example, the database includes only pitchers who have given up less hits than innings pitched and who ususally have low "whip" factors. Pitchers who have pitched in 50+ games or 300+ innings in a season are rated as "durable." Position players include the greats who have either hit for .Avg or have lots of stolen bases, home runs, or RBI's. I have also filled in each decade with lots of lesser but pivitol players who made contributions in other ways such as fielding or who were "key" to their teams progress in any given season. Players with less than 300 AB prior to 1950 or so were rated as "prone" while more modern players with less than 400 AB's where rated "prone". Similarly, players who played in 158+ games are rated "durable." The logic here is so that no MGR constantly plays or relies on the utility player who may have had a high Avg. or a good HR to AB .pct of HR's. In many cases there are multiple versions of each player (ie., Mays, Mantle, Ruth, Aaron, etc.) to choose from. Each player is listed in the database with his name and the year and team abbreviation after his name, i.e., Mantle'55Y or Clemente'59Pi (Pirates), or Jim Bunning'59P (Philadelphia). This will make it a piece of cake to choose the exact player in the database. Of course, everything can be edited! My database will be an excellent utilty for those, like me, who want get right into the heart of historical baseball. Regards Spanky |

Oh yeah, if I might add something more. The database already the 16 teams (8 Natl / 8 American) in existence from 1900 to 1919. So, in many respects the database comes ready to dig in and play and expand upon! There is still some editing work to be done to the assigned players but that is minor in comparison to the rest of the work at hand.

Now, if the good folks at OOTP are looking in ... how about building a "split" screen into the player and team import module where one can bring up two teams (including minor leagues) side by side and be able to drag and drop players from one team to the other? This would be something along the lines of the TRADE module except that it would list all players and not involve and bargaining. Also, it would include the FREE AGENT pool too!

Of course I'll help. And Joe (CommishJoe) is the guy for the job, too. I have my solo league online using BOSI and it adds so much to the experience.
The instructions to upload are actually on the site itself, so you don't need to wait or look for an email. Just go to the site (link's in my sig) and click on FTP Upload Info. Cato's history utility is just that. It's there to basically provide you with an expanded (much expanded) version of the Almanac within the game. It's an incredible utility and would highly recommend it. Gives your leage a customizable look similar to Baseball Ref. Also, anything by Pierre is extremely useful. You can find a link to the site hosting his utilities on the Directory as well. There are tons of graphical mods available, too. You can either download some from the Directory, or there are links there to where the vast majority of them can be found. As far as helping with your site, if you're signing up for an account from All-in-One (Joe), that's the best way to go. Otherwise, yes, I could probably help out if you're just looking to put up a page and/or BOSI. Feel free to IM me (info's in my profile) for more "hands-on" help. Thanks again. |

This sounds great I can't wait for you to get it done. I enjoy doing leagues like this with my family.
