FA compensation status disappears

Playing historical games only.

Playing in 1977-79

Offer arb to guys, they get marked as A free agents. A day after FA opens the FA status disappear. I let a bunch of guys go to get comp picks and rebuild and got no comp. I’ve rerun the game in commissioner mode and can check them to see they have it after arb day but in FA it resets to no comp status.

Hey there, justtxyank,

What does this screen look like?

I don't think the A/B compensation was in effect during those years (it came later in the '80s). You'd have to turn it on because FA in those years irl gave the team no draft picks.

Yes, that box is checked.

It's checked in there, the system tells me they are type A/B free agents, i offer them arb and when I view their profile as commish it says they are type a/b. Then I run the draft and check them again and they are erased.

Hmmmm. The only thing that should clear the A/B tag is the occurrence of the draft itself. I’ll try to replicate. If anyone reading this has experienced something similar, please post too so when the devs come by they have as much info as possible.

There were no Type A or B free agents in that time period. For compensation purposes free agents were ranked by the number of teams which selected the player in the re-entry draft. Note that the free agent process worked very differently in 1976-1980. OOTP doesn't recreate it at all.

Type A and B free agents started as a result of the 1981 strike settlement. Type A were those in the top 20% statistically and compensation was a professional player from the compensation pool. Type B were those in the top 21-30% statistically and compensation was a draft pick from the signing team and a special draft pick between the first and second rounds. All others were unranked, with those selected by four or more teams in the re-entry draft having a draft pick compensation (not sure of the exact details), while those selected by three or fewer teams were uncompensated.

The 1985 strike settlement abolished the previous free agent system, and ushered in Type A, B, and C free agents and a new compensation scheme. This free agent process was MLB's longest-lasting, operating from the 1985-86 off-season up through the 2006-07 off-season.

This is incorrect. There was free agent compensation from 1976-80, with it being a draft pick from the signing team. The order in which free agents were ranked for compensation pick purposes was based on the number of teams selecting the player in the re-entry draft. The player selected by the most teams was ranked first, the player selected by the second-highest number of teams was ranked second, and so on. If two or more players were selected by the same number of teams, the player selected first by that number was ranked higher.

Appreciated. I forgot about 85. To be fair, I was mostly focused on when the auto evolution turned on the A/B option and not the No Compensation default in OOTP. For the years under discussion I think OOTP distills the system to No Compensation until the early 80s. Probably after 1981 but I was too lazy to check each year in the game.

Regardless of what was happening in real life, the issue is in the game itself A/B is turned on but the status i being cleared.

However, I think i figured it out Lands based on your comment.

Arb Date : 12-5 (this sets type A/B status)
FA Filing: 12-14 (they are marked as free agents with comp assigned)
Draft date: 12-15 (historical game has to run drafts at the end of year sadly) The occurrence of the draft is clearing A/B

So perhaps I should set draft date to run before Arb?

This is from memory but when I played that time period and used that comp system, I'd always be rooting for my player to sign before that mid-December date comes around so I can get the compensation. I think that the A/B is for THAT draft and not the next year's. So, if you move it before the arb date, there would, I think, be no compensation because there is no draft to apply the comp to. Maybe you could start the draft later (no sure of the impact of crossing the Jan 1 line) so more people receive compensation as that'd be an extra two weeks with the tag in effect. But, again, I don't think - emphasis on "think" as I am not at a place to test atm - that the A/B tags will apply all the way to literally next December.
