Tony Kubek Felipe Alou Lou Brock PROFILES OF FIRST TIME ELIGIBLE PLAYERS Jim O'Toole Arguably the greatest pitcher in the History of Baseball Replay. O'Toole was the ace of the Big Red Machine dynasty that from 1967-75 won 4 World Series titles, 6 National League Pennants and 8 division titles in 9 years. O'Toole has more postseason wins than any other pitcher in history. His 6 Welch Awards rank second only to the 10 won by the great Cliff Markle. He led the National League in era 10 times in the 11 year period from 1965-1975, and on 7 occassions his era was below 2.00. Only one other pitcher during that entire 11 year stretch (Baltimore's Jack Fisher in 1967) had an era below 2.00 even once. As of the end of 1997 (finished it today) O'Toole ranks second all time in career era (behind deadball era pitcher Nick Maddox's 2.28). He is 8th alltime with 294 wins and his 125 losses are the lowest of any pitcher with at least 250 wins. He is 7th all time in strikeouts and 4th in shutouts.
Willie Stargell National League rookie of the year in 1962 and American League MVP in 1973, Stargell played 16 seasons in the major leagues making the allstar team 7 times. His 525 career homers place him 18th all time as of 1982. He led or co-led his league in homers 3 times. His only postseason experience came as a rookie with Pittsburgh. He homered in the 1962 series but batted just .160 as his Pirates lost to Baltimore in 7 games. He was traded to Washington from Pittsburgh in July, 1968 for outfielders Del Unser and Brant Alyea. The Indians swapped catcher Ray Fosse and P Rick Kester to Washington for him in 1970.
Frank Robinson I have talked about Robinson in detail on the old board. He must be the best player nobody wanted. To be as good as he was yet be traded 5 times is amazing. Robinson was National League rookie of the year in 1956 and won 3 NL MVP Awards with Montreal (1971,1975,1976) but he never played in a postseason game. As of 1982 Robinson ranks 8th all time in career hits, 4th in homers and rbi's, 6th in runs scored and is in the top 15 in both doubles and base on balls. He was the last man to hit 50 homers in a season (until McGwire will accomplish the feat in 1987). He led his league in homers 3 times.
Orlando Cepeda 1958 National League rookie of the year and 1970 MVP, Cepeda made 9 allstar teams in his career. Cepeda played on the Giants 1969 World Championship clob and was a member of 2 pennant winners. In 1969, his 2 run doubler in the 8th inning of Game 7 of the NLCS was the difference in a 4-3 win over St Louis. Cepeda batted .327 in the 1969 postseason. He homered in the deciding game of the series to help the Giants beat Baltimore 2-1. As of 1982, Cepeda ranks 10th alltime in homers and 18th in rbi's.
Billy Williams The 1969 National League MVP made 9 allstar teams in his career. Williams batted .302 in the 1973 postseason as the Cubs won their first World Championship since 1928.
Jerry Adair The second baseman played a big role in Oakland World Series wins in 1970 and 1975. The A's traded catcher Joe Garagiola to Baltimore for Adair in 1960.
Jim Brewer As of 1982 only 3 players had more career saves then Brewer: Billy McCool with 757, Rollie Fingers 601, and Sparky Lyle with 577. Brewer recorded 4 saves in the 1973 postseason. In an era that featured some outstanding closers in the National League, Brewer led the NL in saves 3 times and finished in the top 3 on 3 other occassions.
Jim Pagliaroni Played on two World Series winners with Oakland. His stats are comparable to several other Hall of Fame catchers. He was traded by Boston to the A's in 1964 for 1B-OF Ken Harrelson.
Rich Rollins Steady third baseman for some bad teams, Rollins best season was 1971 when he finished 3rd in the American League in batting. Has nearly 2600 career hits but that likely wont be enough to get him into the HOB Hall of Fame. He was drafted by the Angels from Minnesota in the 1961 expansion draft. California traded him to Cleveland with catcher Tom Egan for outfielder Walt Bond in April of 1967. Rollins went 0-for-3 in his only allstar game appearance.
------------------------------------------------------------------------- So there they are, the newest players eligible for the HOB HALL OF FAME. Please cast your ballots. Voting will remain open until I complete my post on the 1982 season recap. Thanks again.

Jim O'Toole
Frank Robinson Orlando Cepeda Bob Gibson Willie Stargell So this time I caved and voted for a few people, including Gibson who I do think belongs. I still don't agree with some choices, but oh well. To me the position doesn't matter as much as what they did on the field. O'Toole is a lock. The rest should make it and even the one I didn't vote for. (You all know who that is)
