1967 World Series, A's vs Pirates
I haven't posted about my current save as its not an interesting concept but this World Series is an interesting matchup. Historically neither team was a contender in 1967. The Pirates were a .500 team and the A's lost 99 games.
In the save, the 97-65 A's have the 15th ranked MLB payroll. They benefit from minimum wage players like Rick Monday, Reggie Jackson, Joe Rudi, and Catfish Hunter. Full minors provided better ratings for some young players than MLB only would have given them. It also allowed career minor leaguer Walter Bugajski to make the team. He played 3B and led the A's with 30 HRs. The 98-64 Pirates have the 2nd ranked payroll. The save started in 1961. The Pirates had a big market at that time due to the historical 1960 attendance (3rd in MLB). They continued to win and thus maintained high revenue which allowed them to sign top free agents. Despite the low payroll the A's have a strong lineup and the bench includes players (Willie Davis and Deacon Jones) who would be regulars on many teams. A possible weakness is that the Bucs have three lefthanded starting pitchers who could reduce the effectiveness of the A's 2-3-4 hitters. Tony Oliva, Rick Monday, and Reggie Jackson, all hit left handed. A's pitching is among the best. Based on the entire season, the Bucs look to have the advantage, with an expected record 6 wins better than the A's. But the A's closed the season strong, 18-10 from September 1, while the Pirates were 15-13 over that span. TCR drove Jim Bunning to the bullpen and Warren Spahn off the post season roster, and Ron Santo ended the season in a 4 for 42 (.095) slump. So the Pirates right now aren't the team that performed six wins better than the A's. Overall, it looks like a coin toss as to who to favor. OK, enough talk about stats that didn't exist in 1967 and OOTP features. Play ball!

I wasn't confident of the Pirates chances. Koufax got worse and worse over the last six weeks of the season, however, I didn't imagine he'd be this bad in the Series. TCR driving Bunning to the pen and Wilhelm off the World Series roster, plus Santo's horrible slump, well, there was lots of reason to worry.
