best market to relocate to

I have an opportunity to move my team in an online league to a new market ... what are some of the better markets to move to, outside the obvious current markets? Is there a listing on here I could take a look at? Is Austin, Texas a good one? Mexico City? New Orleans?

Nashville, Charlotte, Montreal, Vancouver, Portland, Salt Lake City, Mexico City, Columbus, Oklahoma City.

These would be among the top choices to get the next MLB team if and when they expand.

Austin would be good, San Antonio as well. Both are very large in population.

Being Canadian my choice would one of those option, otherwise I'd pick Mexico City. Possible market size for them would be humongous, would basically be the whole country .

The Athletic, I think, did a dep dive by city. Here are two overview lists:

Based on what we know today and if the Las Vegas and St. Pete stadiums get over the finish line (a big "if"), then Nashville and Salt Lake City are likely the next to get to teams according those in the industry.

Mexico City is unlikely for a number of financial reasons (same with Canada) according to ESPN; New Orleans lost their AAA team and have no affiliated teams now; and Austin has no major league teams at the moment so I doubt MLB would be first.

But, at the end of the day, the best part about OOTP is the "what if" aspect so put them where you want. I mean for realism, maybe Wichita or Schenectady are off the table but why not any city/MSA with 1.5M people or more (Milwaukee has 1.5M people). Real life may be more complex but thankfully, we don't have to worry about politics, ballot initiatives, finance consortiums, etc. in OOTP.

Since you were asking for opinions, my favorite Canadian big city is Vancouver so they always get an expansion team in my "world". Don't really care about exchange rate issues/high taxes because they don't affect the OOTP World. Then I choose a more traditional one out east like Nashville or Charlotte.

Start a new save, crack open the editor and check which markets are best.

In real life, New Orleans doesn't have the necessary corporate support, and the Superdome would not be a good baseball facility, at this point.

The weather is similar to Houston's so you'd also need a retractable roof stadium, at worst. And, you'd only have maybe a handful of days/nights each year to have the roof open so you'd be better off building a fixed-dome stadium.

So that's why New Orleans is never mentioned anymore as a serious expansion candidate.

In my latest OOTP MLB season, the Rays moved to Montreal and became the Mounties. The Pirates moved to New Orleans and became the Buccaneers (still pirates). The A's moved to Las Vegas and became the Aces. The expansion teams were in Buffalo (the Wild Wings), Charlotte, Nashville, San Antonio, Memphis, and Portland (Oregon).

The leading metropolitan statistical areas in the U.S. without a major league baseball team. Figures use the 2021 estimates of population multiplied by the per capita income to calculate the economic potential of the area. Results are scaled by assigning the smallest area with an MLB team under this measure (Cleveland) a value of 100 and adjusting the areas accordingly.

282 = San Jose-Sunnyvale-Santa Clara, CA
249 = Riverside-San Bernardino-Ontario, CA
183 = Portland-Vancouver-Hillsboro, OR-WA
178 = Charlotte-Concord-Gastonia, NC-SC
178 = Austin-Round Rock-Georgetown, TX
169 = Sacramento-Roseville-Folsom, CA
152 = Orlando-Kissimmee-Sanford, FL
150 = Nashville-Davidson--Murfreesboro--Franklin, TN
149 = Indianapolis-Carmel-Anderson, IN
148 = San Antonio-New Braunfels, TX
142 = Las Vegas-Henderson-Paradise, NV
115 = Providence-Warwick, RI-MA
109 = Virginia Beach-Norfolk-Newport News, VA-NC
108 = Columbus, OH
103 = Jacksonville, FL
102 = Raleigh-Cary, NC
092 = Richmond, VA
090 = Hartford-East Hartford-Middletown, CT

This is, of course, a simple economic ranking. It does not take into account other factors such as proximity to areas with an existing MLB club, stadium availability, area infrastructure, etc.

oooh, I like this a lot!! I use MSA when creating my leagues or expanding my current ones.

What I haven't done was incorporate per capita income. Is there an easy way to put that on a spreadsheet?

The U.S. Census Bureau website has plenty of downloadble files with population figures. For per capita income data, try the Bureau of Economic Analysis website as well as the Census Bureau website.

ETA: I'm currently working on downloading the appropriate files and putting something together.

Interesting... I went to college in the San Bernardino-Ontario-Riverside area and would never have thought it to be a top market.

I grew up in the Charlotte-Gastonia-Concord area and there is absolutely no question that is a fantastic market. Not only is the metro area itself very big (much bigger than Atlanta), there are several smaller metros within a quick drive (Raleigh-Durham, Greenville-Spartanburg, Columbia, Charleston SC, Greensboro).
