Here are the players eligible for the 1981 HOB Hall of Fame vote.
First Time on Ballot Sandy Koufax Don Drysdale Brooks Robinson Don Cardwell Felix Mantilla Tony Kubek Claude Raymond Felipe Alou Juan Pizarro Lou Brock Mike Cuellar Others Eligible Roger Maris Bob Gibson Jackie Brandt Joe Garagiolo You may also vote for players who made their first appearance on the ballot last season but did not get a single vote. If they do not get any votes this year they will be removed from the ballot. There stats are available in the 1980 HOB Hall of Fame ballot thread. They are: Last Chance to get at least 1 vote Don Demeter Joe Hoerner Gary Peters Larry Sherry Milo Candini Rocky Colavito Tommy Henrich Arnie Portecarrero Here is a look at the first time nominees. Don Cardwell Won the NL Welch Award in 1972. Never pitched in a postseason game but was on the roster of the NL Champion 1957 Phillies.
Don Drysdale 1960 Welch Award winner pitched in two World Series for the Dodgers.
Sandy Koufax HOB's all time strikeout king also ranks 16th all time in wins (as of 1993).
Tony Kubek A couple of years late to get in on Yankees World Series teams but Kubek was a consistant presence at shortstop for the Yankees throughout the 60's.
Felix Mantilla Being a member of 3000 hit club should be enough to get the steady second baseman into the Hall, but maybe not this year.
Brooks Robinson The HOB Brooks Robinson was every bit as good defensively as his real life counterpart. Was a member of 3 straight Oriole World Series winners from 1960-62
Cluade Raymond As of 1993 Raymond ranks 7th all time in saves but voters did not think much of a pair of better closers on last years ballot. Helped the White Sox to 5 pennants and one World Championship.
Felipe Alou Outfielder seems to lack the pedigree necessary for the HOB hall of fame.
Juan Pizarro Won 252 games in his career but pales in comparison to the reputation Koufax and Drysdale had.
Mike Cuellar 1959 rookie of the year lacks the stats of other pitching nominees but none of the others can say they pitched for 4 World Champion and 7 pennant winning teams.
Lou Brock Brock had some great stolen base numbers and he helped the Cubs to the 1973 World Series but he is likely not Hall of Fame material.
Career stats for Maris, Gibson, Brandt and Garagiolo can be found in the HOB 1980 Hall of Fame ballot thread. It is here http://www.ootpbb.com/board/ubb/ultimatebb.php?ubb=get_topic&f=2&t=000017 In short Roger Maris had 2665 career hits with 521 homers. He was the 1957 AL Rookie of the Year. Bob Gibson was 225-163 (thanks for the correction Killebrew) and ranks 6th all time (as of 1993) with 4228 strikeouts. Jackie Brandt was a 7 time allstar with the Cardinals and the 1967 NL MVP. He retired with 2900 hits and 461 career homers. Joe Garagiolo stayed on this year ballot because of the one vote he got. His stats are quite comparable to other hall of fame catchers. 2467 hits and 213 hr. He played on 3 World Series winners with Baltimore. All current members of the Hall of Fame can be viewed here: http://www.ootpbb.com/board/ubb/ultimatebb.php?ubb=get_topic&f=2&t=000006 Please cast your ballots. Voting will remain open until I finish posting the 1981 World Series recap [ December 19, 2001: Message edited by: Tiger Fan ]

I vote for:
1. Felix Mantilla (whatta' career - consistency) 2. Roger Maris (500 HR's & steady) 3. Don Drysdale (wins-win%-ERA) 4. Bob Gibson (Note - Gibson is actually 225-163 in the HOB, the 251 wins were his real life total) |

Damn missed the 1980 balloting:
1.) Roger Maris 2.) Felix Mantilla 3.) Sandy Koufax Maybe next year for Brandt (what position was he?), Drysdale & Robinson... What might be helpful is if we had somewhere to get a few of the highlight stats (BA, HR, ERA, W/L) for the current HOB Hall of Famers so we had more to compare it too.... (of course this would probably be a huge amount of work for you) |

(of course this would probably be a huge amount of work for you) Brandt was an outfielder. Here is a link to the career leader board. Hopefully that is what you meant by highlight stats. http://www.ootpbb.com/board/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic&f=2&t=000029&p= There is also career totals and a brief bio of all HOFers in my HOB Hall of Fame thread so you can compare their stats with current nominees if you like. Thanks for voting.

Guess I better get my ballot cast.
You have to be pretty special to make it your first time on the ballot so I am only going with one first timer. All time strikeout leader Sandy Koufax. I will also vote for Bob Gibson and Roger Maris. Thanks again for the response. Keep the votes coming.

On Mantilla:
He had 3000 hits but he is *NOT* a first-ballot Hall of Famer. In fact, players like him are why the Hall is dilluted now-a-days. He had a solid career, but not a legendary one...hell, he didn't even have a great one. In his best year he hit .330 with 90 RBI's. That was his *BEST* year. An average season for him was .280 20 75 10. Is that Hall of Fame matieral? I think not. Hence, this is why the Hall of Fame should be split into two seconts. One the Hall of Fame, and the other the Hall of Great, or something like that. Squish. |

What got me on Mantilla's side is the consistancy. Over a 12 year period he played in 156 or more games each season with 20 or more HR's each year from a non-power position. 3154 hits, 422 HR's, 249 steals should not be diluting the HOB HOF talent too much
