The Great Replay Project - 1905-?
Hello everyone,
Recently, I've begun to enjoy using OOTP more as a fast-paced replay tool rather than a GM sort of game. I am planning on embarking on a multi-year project where I sim every single week in MLB history starting in 1905, documenting week-by-week as we proceed. I'll be posting here for documentation and if anyone is interested -- hopefully the posts keep me on track and immersed without moving too quickly. |

1905's Opening Week: April 14th - April 21st
This Week in History
The Supreme Court reaches a ruling in Lochner v New York, declaring the maximum work day unconstitutional in violation of the Fourteenth Amendment, effectively limiting the maximum hours a laborer could work per day. The Cretan assembly announces a union with the state of Greece following their independence from the Ottoman Empire. Game of the Week The Philadelphia Phillies (1-3) dueled with the New York Giants (3-0) for twelve long innings in a game that saw two home runs, one from Phillies slugger Sherry Magee in the top of the fourth and another from the great Mike Donlin for New York in the bottom of that same inning. Donlin's triple later also ultimately resulted in him scoring the winning run in the bottom of the 12th on a walk off single from Sam Mertes to give the Giants a 5-4 victory. 22 year old upstart Red Ames would secure the win in his first outing of the season -- one where the Giants are believed to prominently feature him in the rotation. On the losing side, Togie Pittinger fell to 0-2 despite a valiant 11.2 inning performance. Performance of the Week Pitcher: Bill Donovan of the Tigers pitched 11 innings of scoreless, 3 hit baseball against the 3-1 Chicago White Sox to give the Tigers their 1st win of the season in a tenuous 1-0 victory. He struck out 3 and walked 3 en route to victory. Batter: Boston Beaneaters catcher Tom Needham went 4/4 with 2 doubles and 4 RBI in Boston's 5-0 victory over the Brooklyn Superbas. Neeham is slashing .391/.417/.478 on the season with 5 RBI. Standings Giants off to a hot start with a 4 game winning streak as they are expected to dominate the elder circuit. American League seems very much up for grabs. National League New York Giants: 4-0 Cincinnati Reds: 4-2 Brooklyn Suberbas: 4-3 Chicago Cubs: 3-3 Pittsburgh Pirates: 2-3 St. Louis Cardinals: 2-3 Boston Beaneaters: 2-4 Philadelphia Phillies: 1-4 American League Detroit Tigers: 2-0 Washington Senators: 4-2 Philadelphia Athletics: 3-2 Chicago White Sox: 3-2 St. Louis Browns: 2-3 New York Highlanders: 2-3 Boston Americans: 2-4 Cleveland Naps: 0-2 League Leaders To come after a month of play. |

Sir Jack Hobbs, one of the most celebrated cricketers in history, makes his debut for Surrey. The World Exhibition opens in Liege Game of the Week The Pittsburgh Pirates (6-4) overcame a 7-2 deficit against the Chicago Cubs (5-6) in the last three innings, scoring 3 in the 7th, 1 in the 8th, and 2 in the 9th, including a walk-off double from Ginger Beaumont which scored Fred Clarke. The Cubs got to Pittsburgh starter Chick Robatille in the sixth, where they scored 5 runs, before Pittsburgh promptly responded in the next three innings by routing Mordecai Brown, the Cubs star pitcher who had a 1.85 ERA last season. Brown fell to 1-2 on the year as he gets off to a disappointing start, while Homer Hilldenbrand's excellent 2 innings out of the bullpen were enough to score him the win. Performance of the Week Pitcher: Cy Young allowed just 3 baserunners all day and struck out eight in a 2-hit shutout of the Washington Senators as he helped get the Boston Americans their 3rd win of the season. Young is 1-2 on the season with a 1.37 ERA on the so-far pitiful Boston Americans, having suffered losses to the Washington Senators and Philadelphia Athletics. Batter: Frank Bowerman went 4/5 with 3 RBI and 2 runs scored in the New York Giants' 12-1 drubbing of the Brooklyn Suberpas. The 36 year old is in his sixth year with the Giants, and this game was a nice refuge from an otherwise poor season as he bats .222/.300/.259. Standings The New York Giants stay hot atop the National League, but drop a series 1-2 to Brooklyn, while Cincinnati's sweep of the Cardinals puts them a game behind New York. The Tigers go 1-6 on the week, including being swept in a 3 game series against the White Sox, while the Boston Americans fall to the cellar despite the 2nd best defense in the AL by ERA. National League New York Giants: 8-2 Cincinnati Reds: 7-3 Brooklyn Superbas: 9-5 Pittsburgh Pirates: 6-4 Chicago Cubs: 5-6 Boston Beaneaters:3-8 Philadelphia Phillies: 2-7 St. Louis Cardinals: 2-7 American League Chicago White Sox: 7-3 Washington Senators: 8-4 New York Highlanders: 6-5 Philadelphia Athletics: 6-5 St. Louis Browns: 5-5 Cleveland Naps: 4-5 Detroit Tigers: 3-6 Boston Americans: 3-9 |

This Week in History
Lists of Jules Verne's unpublished work are published by French Newspapers Game of the Week The New York Highlanders (7-5) topped the Boston Americans (4-10) 4-1 in a 17 inning marathon that was only ended when Wee Willie Keeler struck a two out three run walk-off home run in the bottom of the 17th off of Cy Young, who had pitched 16.2 innings of one run baseball to that point. Despite pitching for 16 innings without giving up a single earned run, Highlanders pitcher Bill Hogg was graced with a no-decision after being replaced in the 17th by reliever Clark Griffith, who earned his second win of the season. Performance of the Week Pitcher: Impossible to not give it to Bill Hogg, whose 16 innings in his season debut gave the Highlanders every opportunity to win despite coming up short while he was on the mound. Hogg struck out 9 in the process while allowing 11 baserunners but only 4 in scoring position all game. Hogg has made one other appearance, 2.1 innings in relief with 1 ER in another victory over Boston. Batter: Pirates rookie Right Fielder Otis Clymer was a home run away from the cycle as he coordinated the 9-3 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals. Going 4/4 with 2 doubles, a triple and a walk, Clymer was simply impossible to get out. He added 4 RBI and two runs scored as the Pirates moved to 8-4. On the season, Clymer is slashing .406/.433/.547 and is 3rd in the NL in triples, with 3. Standings A hot week places the Pirates alone atop the National League at 11-5 as they move into a key 4 game set against the 9-7 Cincinnati Reds. Brooklyn's high-powered offense compels success against New York early in the week, but they fall flat against the Phillies later. The Chicago White Sox continue their success in the American League with series wins over the Detroit Tigers and Cleveland Naps, placing them in the driver's seat. A bottleneck is formed right below them, with Philadelphia, New York, Washington, and Detroit capable of taking the top spot with a strong run of games. National League Pittsburgh Pirates: 11-5 New York Giants: 10-6 Brooklyn Superbas: 11-8 Cincinnati Reds: 9-7 Chicago Cubs: 8-10 Philadelphia Phillies: 6-8 Boston Beaneaters: 6-11 St. Louis Cardinals: 5-11 American League Chicago White Sox: 11-5 Philadelphia Athletics: 9-7 Washington Senators: 10-8 New York Highlanders: 8-8 Detroit Tigers: 8-8 Cleveland Naps: 7-8 Boston Americans: 7-11 St. Louis Browns: 7-12 |

Upheaval in the Tsarist government leads to the Union of Unions forming in Russia, demanding universal suffrage. Agile wins the Kentucky Derby Game of the Week The Chicago Cubs (11-12) and Boston Beaneaters (9-13) played over two full games in a 19 inning marathon. You'd have never guessed how long the game went given merely the 12-4 final score, but after going 9 innings tied 3-3, the Cubs and Beaneaters gave the fans a wealth of free baseball. Cubs rookie Big Jeff Pfeffer improved to 4-1, amazingly going the entire 19 innings on 246 pitches as his successful maiden campaign continues. Irv Young, another rookie, took the mound for Boston and matched Pfeffer blow-for-blow for 13 long innings. He would then be relieved by Vic Willis, who went 5 innings but capsized for 8 earned runs in the 19th inning, allowing Chicago to take an insurmountable lead that they would not relinquish. Every single Cub would score in this one. Performance of the Week Pitcher: Orval Overall is a rookie who has had his struggles this season for the Cincinnati Reds, and he was put in a tough position against the hot Pittsburgh Pirates while already having an 0-4 record. On this day though, Overall would not be denied, as he put together a 3 hit, 10 K shutout against Pittsburgh without much help from his offense. The 1-0 Reds victory tied them with Pittsburgh atop the National League. On the season, Overall is 1-5 with a 3.06 ERA. Batter: The Phillies' John Titus has had an incredible start to the season, and that continued in Philadelphia's 11-2 win over Pittsburgh as Titus went 3/3 with a double and a walk. Titus would drive in two runs and score three himself, accounting for 5 of the runs scored on the day for the Phillies. Titus is slashing .355/.444/.539 and leads both leagues in slugging percentage while his 8 stolen bases are good for 2nd in the NL behind Cincinnati's Fred Ordwell. Standings The Reds surge in the NL backed by a sweep of the Brooklyn Suberpas and a split with Pittsburgh. The pitiful Cardinals offense continues to dig a deeper hole for themselves despite stymying the continued success of the New York Giants with a series split. Very little to separate the American League teams as most float right around .500, including the Boston Americans who have a successful week in order to take them one step closer to reentering contention. National League Cincinnati Reds: 14-9 Pittsburgh Pirates: 14-9 New York Giants: 13-9 Brooklyn Superbas: 13-13 Philadelphia Phillies: 10-11 Chicago Cubs: 11-13 Boston Beaneaters: 10-13 St. Louis Cardinals: 7-15 American League Chicago White Sox: 13-7 Philadelphia Athletics: 11-9 Cleveland Naps: 10-9 Washington Senators: 11-11 Detroit Tigers: 9-10 Boston Americans: 10-12 New York Highlanders: 9-11 St. Louis Browns: 8-12 |

World Heavyweight champion James Jeffries retires for the first time, undefeated. Las Vegas is founded. Game of the Week The New York Giants (16-12) defeated the Pittsburgh Pirates (16-13) 5-4 in a close battle between two teams near the top of the National League. Pirates pitcher Chick Robitaille would open the scoring himself with a 2-run home run in the top of the 3rd inning. The Giants would quickly respond, making it 2-2 in the 4th before the combined efforts of Fred Carisch and rookie Del Howard gave Pittsburgh the lead again at 4-2 in the top of the 5th. Robitaille would fail to hold onto the lead, giving up 3 runs in the bottom of the 5th before being relieved by Deacon Philippe. Giants starter Dummy Taylor went the distance, improving to 2-3. Mike Donlin was the star for New York as he went 3/3 with a walk. Performance of the Week Pitcher: A Spike Shannon single was all that prevented Phillies starter Tully Sparks from completing a no-hitter, as Sparks guiding Philadelphia to a 2-0 victory over the Cardinals allowing just 1 hit and 2 walks. Sparks has made 3 stars and is 2-1 with a 1.67 ERA on the season thus far. Batter: Cubs right fielder Billy Maloney was a force to be reckoned with as he tortured Giants starter Hooks Wiltse with a 4/4 6 RBI performance which included 2 doubles and a home run. Chicago's 10-5 victory brought them to 14-14 on the season and secured a series win against the favored Giants. Maloney is batting .343/.402/.549 on the season and is all over the leaderboards. Tied with Sam Mertes of the Giants for the NL lead in RBI with 24, tied with Brooklyn's Harry Lumley with 3 home runs for 1st in the NL, 2nd in the NL with 9 stolen bases, and 4th in NL OPS. Standings Philadelphia's sweep of the Cardinals and a 4-1 week has the Phillies flirting with the elite of the National League. The Giants start out 2-0 in an early season 4 game set with Pittsburgh, and St. Louis finds themselves on a 7 game losing streak. The White Sox take a 3 game advantage over 2nd place while the other American League teams continue to tread water. The Highlanders struggle, being swept by Chicago and splitting a series with the St. Louis Browns. Tanya wins the Belmont Stakes A major pogrom is launched against Jewish communities in Belarus. It is part of a significant series of anti-Jewish pogroms that will occur across the western reaches of the Russian Empire during the year. Game of the Week The May 25th matchup between the Pittsburgh Pirates (20-14) and Boston Beaneaters (14-18) was a test of resilience, a key characteristic of any team that seeks to succeed over the grueling, long season. The Pirates got to Kaiser Wilhelm early... [Nickname as you might expect, and the record holder for the longest consecutive scoreless innings streak in the minor leagues with 97 (!!) innings]... putting together 4 runs in the first two innings. Yet Boston was quick to respond, scoring eight runs in the 3rd and 4th off the bats of Jim Delhanty, Harry Wolverton and Bud Sharpe. Wilhelm pitched from the 3rd-6th inning scoreless but ran into trouble against the same part of the lineup in the 7th when the Pirates cut the Boston lead to 9-8 despite a poor performance from Pittsburgh's pitching staff. Pitchers Sam Leever and Mike Staff cleaned things up going 3 innings without conceding a run combined for the Bucs, and the so-far disappointing star pitcher Irv Young came in to relieve for Boston. A Fred Raymer error set up a 2-run double for Bill Clancy, who would give the Pirates a 10-9 lead that they would not give up in the ninth inning. Young got the loss, falling to 4-5 on the season. Performance of the Week Pitcher: Perhaps some deja vu? Just six days after his previous one-hit shutout, Tully Sparks did it again, this time in a 3-0 win vs the Cincinnati reds for Philadelphia. Sparks struck out 4 in the win and improved to a 3-1 record with a 1.25 ERA. Batter: Jimmy Sheckard of the Brooklyn Superbas drove in 4 runs via Grand Slam and scored two himself in a 4/5 performance against the New York Giants. Sheckard would also steal a base in the contest. It wasn't enough for Brooklyn, as Harry McIntire allowed a 4 run collapse in the bottom of the 9th, capped off with a Sam Mertes walk-off single. Standings Red-hot Phillies continue fantastic May and climb to the top of the NL, being 8-2 in their last ten. Pittsburgh set to enter key series against the Reds, who struggled in recent series against New York and Philadelphia. White Sox widen the gap going 4-2 over the last week. Cleveland is keeping up though after a 4 game sweep of the Philadelphia Athletics. Rest of the AL remains a melting pot waiting for another team to break off the bubble. This Week in History
The Japanese win a Battle of Tsushima, a landmark victory for the country in the Russo-Japanese War Lewis and Clark Centennial Exhibition opens in Portland Game of the Week The weasely St. Louis Cardinals (11-22) visited the windy city to take on the Chicago Cubs (19-17) as they tried to right a ship that's already irrecoverably off course. The Cubs took an early 1-0 lead in the 2nd off a single from veteran 3B Doc Casey, but St. Louis catcher Jack Warner was compelled to carry his team to victory on this day. He drove in a run in the 4th and had a 6th inning 2-run double off of Cubs veteran Buttons Briggs, giving the Cardinals a 3-1 lead in the sixth. Cardinals rookie starter Jake Theilman, despite allowing 12 hits to this point, had done well to hold Chicago to just one run. He would run into some trouble in the 9th after allowing two men on base with two outs. The Cardinals lead would evaporate when red-hot Billy Maloney struck his third triple of the season, scoring two and tying the game. Frank Chance's opportunity to end the game though, was foiled by Theilman who compelled a groundout. Regardless, the wings of the Cardinals had been clipped. The great Mordecai Brown would come on in relief, shutting down St. Louis' attempts to regain the lead in the tenth and the Cubs promptly put St. Louis out of their misery with a walk-off courtesy of Joe Tinker, leaving Theilman with a defeat and a 200 pitch performance in vain. Performance of the Week Pitcher: Barney Pelty continued his tremendous 1905 campaign with an incredible 18 innings without allowing a single earned run as the Browns defeated the Tigers 2-1 in a marathon of a game. Pelty threw 217 pitches and struck out 8 while improving his record to 4-2 and his ERA to a terrific 1.18 Batter: In a week full of tremendous days at the plate, Ginger Beaumont of the Pirates was the best of the bunch. Going 6/6 with a double, 2 RBI, a stole base and scoring 2 of his own runs, Beaumont set the table and finished the job in Pittsburgh's 14-3 demolition of the Cardinals. Beaumont, who has led the NL in hits every season since 1902, is slashing .339/.373/.816 with 14 stolen bases and 26 RBI. Standings NL Elites beat up on the Cardinals en route to a tightening of the race atop the league. Boston wins only one game, falling to the St. Louis tier. Cleveland and Chicago solidify their hold on the AL as other teams continue to float around .500, struggling to break away. National League Philadelphia Phillies: 24-14 Pittsburgh Pirates: 25-16 New York Giants: 25-16 Chicago Cubs: 24-18 Cincinnati Reds: 18-21 Brooklyn Superbas: 18-26 Boston Beaneaters: 15-25 St. Louis Cardinals: 13-26 American League Cleveland Naps: 22-12 Chicago White Sox:23-13 Philadelphia Athletics: 17-19 St. Louis Browns: 18-21 Detroit Tigers: 17-20 New York Highlanders: 17-20 Washington Senators: 17-21 Boston Americans: 15-20 |
