Assessing player issue
On Nov 9, 1871, a player won the Most Valuable Player Award.
Eight days later, his team allowed him to be taken in an expansion draft. True, the player's ratings were not impressive, but he led the league in WAR, OPS, and SLG (in short 32 game season). He was likely in his prime (27 years old). Fans love him. Teams allowed to protect 16 player and so I would have thought such a player would have been protected. |

In 1871, there is no auto-protect and the number of protected players is limited to 10 by default. It's nice he won the MVP and must be good given he went second (though not first) in the expansion draft, but he was a 14-round pick in the draft in 1871 so I reckon the AI thought, going-forward, it had better options and needs - esp. positionally given the small size of teams and the ability to only protect 10 players.
