Well, I don't think someone doing someone's elses job is right at all. As a GM, you are asked (for lack of a better word) to write on your own terms. Not someone else writing them for you. If you want to hire a co-GM, do so with your commissioner's premission, but for hire someone just to write articles is not right.

If your league requires you to write articles, and you suck at it, then why are in the league?

Just .02 more added to the bank.

The more you write, the better it will be and the more comfortable you will feel. Give it a try, it is lots of fun and really helps you to take a critical look at your franchise.

I encourage all of my league’s participants to write, regardless of how they percieve their own writing skill level. It can be fun and rewarding to write something, anything, about your fake baseball team. Do not compare your skills with others in the league. My own skills pale in comparison to Glenn, Brad, Michael, Mike, Herb and some of the other poetic GMs in the USBA but I don’t let it deter me. Some of those guys are like Grantland Friggin' Rice in the OOTP world. Some owners write 1000 words, some write 50 words. It's all good, regardless of syntax errors, spelling errors, whatever. It all goes to the good of the league and I enjoy reading everyone's contributions to the league.

Amen to that.

Just do what you feel comfortable doing. Nobody's going to ask for his money back

Hey Tony,
I totally understand where you are coming from but the beauty of the computer era is that you can really write anonymously, its not like you are going to be called up in front of the class to read what you write. I know as an owner in the USBA I am extremely self-concious about the things I write and rarely do I even know if people read them, but the more you write, the more comfortable you will be and the stronger your writing skills in every aspect. I honestly think that you should look at writing for your team as an opportunity rather than an obstacle. Doing it will only help you in every way.

Brad

P.S.- Can you guess that I'm getting my MA in English so I can be a high school English teacher?!

Yeah writing stories is pretty cool. I sucked at it when I started but with all things the more you work the better you get.

Here's an idea Tony. Check out some other leagues and find a writing style that you like. Then copy that style to give you something to go by. In the USBA we have numerous styles of writing going on. We have Mock PTI/The Season/SportsCenter besides the team writings. Some guys copy the main stats and write 6 sentences about who they play next and how the team did that week. Some just write a sentence saying they suck that week.

Sure your first articles will suck, everyones does. If I had to see my old Bitch by Mitch articles in the defunct VSBL then I'd probably laugh at them.

If you don't really feel confident about your writing skills, then do what I did and write anonymously (I did it for other reasons, but it should work out the same for you). I even went as far as to create a new e-mail address for feedback and kept this up for most of the 2 seasons the league ran. The best part was to hear people talk to me on IM about the article and column.

If that ins't your thing then just simply remember this 1 thing. You are writing for fun, not a job. You won't get graded and booted out of school. And most of all, you are taking pride in your league by taking time to make it a little more personal.

Writing about your own team is gay.
