base coaches

When you are looking to hire base coaches do you look at their reputations? what part do you think their reputation plays?

I think their reputation just makes them cost more. :P

Good or better at in-game running, then whatever development skill I may need most, then preferably doesn't blow up the staff cohesion.

I'm with snepp. For me, "in-game" is most important.

I focus on their actual skills as coaches working with players and what talents they can offer. I look at their experience. And their ability to relate to players, far more important than some nebulous "reputation".

The main rating I look for in a base coach is teaching defense.

I shoot for my teams to have ERAs that are 50 points lower than their FIP, outstanding defense at as many positions as possible, defensive efficiencies well into the .700s. It is easier to build a great pitching staff through defense than through actual pitching, and also easier to handle injuries to the pitching staff that way.

So when I put together a coaching staff, I want a coach who is Legendary at teaching catching, one who is Legendary at teaching infield, and one who is Legendary at teaching Outfield. Once I have that with my coaches (considering the bench coach as well) with at least average relationships, then I look at both teaching and in-game running.

I don't bother looking at reputation at all.

I don't even look at reputation anymore. I look at the teaching in-game skills and the mechanics, development, and aging skills they have.
