To Steam or not to Steam
I have always bought OOTP through the pre-order website but have been thinking the last couple of years about switching to the Steam version. All my other games are through Steam so I'm leaning toward Steam but can't decide.
Anyone make the jump to Steam and love it? Anyone make the jump to Steam and hate it? ![]() ![]() ![]()

Steam works for me
Moved 3 years ago to Steam - it is just easier to have everything in one place and I love the automatic updates.

I went to Steam a couple of versions ago. I like it for, fast download/install, convenience of auto updates, and Steam Workshop.
Along with that most of my games are from Steam, so nice to have almost everything in one place. |

Does steam solve the issue of a lack of a “cloud save” on the standalone? If I move to steam can I start a core game save on one computer and continue it on another without manually moving files?

I used to be Steam first but then got burned with 23 and auto update. So never again

I love the convenience of Steam; however, I prefer games DRM free / not linked to distribution service because I like having more control over my games. For example, sometimes game updates can break core functionality. With Steam, you're waiting for a roll back or patch to be issued before you can play potentially. Whereas with the DRM free version, you can install an older version without issue. Also, if a feature is removed in an updated build that you enjoyed, you have no way of getting that back with the Steam version. There is also a risk, although very minimal, that the game can be removed from your library and/or Steam stops existing...highly unlikely, but not impossible.
Ultimately, it's personal preference. |

Read a few threads about people losing their license, or running out of activations or losing their HDD.
Steam is just installing software and then you can install the game on any device that has the Steam software. No activations, no key codes, no going back and having to find the e-mail with the key code, no having to find the download link. |

To me, Steam is the clear choice. Not having to deal with licensing makes things much easier. I have OOTP15-24 (and soon to be 25) all in my Steam library and can install any of those games at any time on any PC with a single click.

From what I remember the lack of steam cloud saves for OOTP is due to the size of the save files

I have bought from Steam since OOTP15 for a single reason... it's easier to reinstall the game on a new computer when you get a new one.

I did the Steam version this year for the first time, primarily for convenience.

There's a 10 GB limit per account per game.

I am not trying to argue, but the 'limit' really is set by the developer.

I thought that the absolute max per any individual game was 95GB (from what I've read anyway), but that it cost the developers additional fees to ramp up the capacity to get there?

I always do steam. So much easier to get a notification about a update when I want to go launch the game, or if Steam was already open a automatically updated game.

Last year was the first year in a bunch of them that I didn't use steam
I regretted it. The automatic updates make it more than worth it. |
