When do you rest your position players??
I've been trying to optimize my team's performance and keep my players in the best shape possible. One aspect I always struggle with is when and how often to give my position players a day off. Do any of you have a rule of thumb or specific strategies for resting players?

Personally, my starters are starters for a reason. If I had a bench guy, that was close to as good as a starter, maybe my strategy would change. But they’re not, so on the depth chart, on the column that says something like “when they play”, I select the option that says, “when the starter is tired”

I like to give guys a breather on Sunday, particularly if they played Saturday night. Depends on stamina and injury risk, but I will sit two or three guys for the day. It’s more of a traditional, old-fashioned approach, I know. I went to a lot of Sunday afternoon games as a kid, and my Dad would say, “who are these guys?!”
At the start of the season, I set the lineups, complete with certain bench guys playing every fifth day, every seventh day, every tenth day, and so forth. But I watch the fatigue factor, too.

I did some testing this morning, for everyone's reference
90-100% = Rested 60-89% = Slightly Tired 35-59% = Tired < 35% = Exhausted I might just go with resting at 70% or something

My experience has been that injuries escalate quickly when players start to show any fatigue. So it may not be so much about performance as it is about injury prevention, particularly in today’s game.
I typically rest players that are showing any fatigue unless tomorrow is an off-day, or if I have 2-3 stars showing fatigue. In the latter situation, it will depend on L/R matchups the next couple of days and who I might like as a pinch hitter today. |

It all depends on how good the guy behind the starter is. I have some core position players who will play as long as they can get out of bed that morning. Other guys are platooned, or I set the back up to play every X day (again, depends).
Like so many other things everything depends on the individual player and his value to the team. There are guys you simply can't afford to have out of the lineup, some guys who can go either way, and everything in between.

I try to rotate pretty heavily. I consider it a significant failure of roster construction if I don't have at least 11-12 hitters starting against at least one of LHP/RHP.
